Chapter 143

**Chapter 143: New Year's Gift**

After dinner, Obito and Haneda helped Grandma clean up the table. Shortly afterward, there was a knock on the door, and two voices could be heard talking outside.

"Kakashi, are you sure this is the place?"

"If Haneda isn't home, he's probably at the training grounds or with Obito."

Hearing his name mentioned, Obito recognized Kakashi's voice and pouted as he went to open the door.

"Hey, dumb Kakashi, what are you doing at my house?"

When he opened the door, he saw both Sakumo and Kakashi standing there. Embarrassed, Obito's expression changed.

"Mr. Sakumo is here too! Come on in."

Obito then moved beside Kakashi and whispered, "What do you want, dumb Kakashi?"

"Don't flatter yourself," Kakashi replied with his usual bored expression. Seeing Haneda approach, he greeted him with a smile, "Haneda! I knew you'd be here!"

"Hello, Kakashi, Mr. Sakumo!" Haneda was thrilled to see them, as he thought Sakumo might have been with Kakashi at the lantern festival and didn't expect them to come visit him, especially when he wasn't even home.

"Haneda, this is a gift from my father and me." Kakashi took a neatly wrapped long box from a sealing scroll. Inside, Haneda found a sword—longer than a short sword, somewhat like a katana, with a thick spine and a solid weight. It was perfect for him. The blade had a silver sheen, with faint serrated patterns along the edge. Haneda admired its handsome appearance, giving it a quick flourish.

Kakashi explained, "My father had a samurai friend from the Land of Iron find this. It's crafted from metal that can conduct both lightning and wind chakra. It's called a Kusanagi sword, capable of easily cutting through steel."

"A Kusanagi sword?" Haneda immediately thought of Orochimaru's "stretching blade" and Itachi's Totsuka Blade. Like this one, they were also Kusanagi swords, each with unique properties. One could extend indefinitely, and the other had sealing powers through genjutsu. While this one seemed more ordinary in comparison, Sakumo had clearly gone to great lengths to acquire it.

"Thank you," Haneda said, looking at Sakumo, who smiled back at him.

"Since it doesn't have a name, why don't you give it one? Maybe one day it'll be as famous as the Totsuka Blade," suggested Sakumo.

Haneda looked at the reflection of his face in the blade, running through countless cool-sounding names in his head. But then he thought of various scenes: the lives of people in the Land of Waves, Yahiko, Nagato, and Konan's hopes for peace, and the suffering of ninjas amidst the horrors of war.

He sheathed the sword, and said, "Akatsuki—a light to break the darkness."

"An excellent name," Sakumo nodded approvingly. He understood Haneda's values and beliefs, knowing that Haneda wished for peace and the end of war.

Kakashi pondered the name for a moment. "A very meaningful name, Haneda."

"Of course! Haneda's always good at naming things—like our teacher Minato!" Obito chimed in. Hearing this, Kakashi's smile froze. He thought back to a time when Minato had named something with a bizarre, overly-long title, and he had to admit, Haneda's naming was leagues better.

Outside, the sound of footsteps approached. Under the glow of the festival lanterns, two figures appeared—it was Fugaku and the clan leader.

"Haneda!" Fugaku called out, waving as he spotted him. He greeted Sakumo respectfully, "Mr. Sakumo."

The clan leader noticed Sakumo as well and smiled. "Sakumo's here to visit Haneda too, I see."

Fugaku walked over to Haneda and smiled, placing a hand on his shoulder. "Why didn't you come to my house tonight?"

"I thought you'd be at the hospital with Mikoto," Haneda replied softly.

"Well, I did go see her, but then I realized you'd be home alone, so I came looking for you." Fugaku then glanced at Obito, who was sulking nearby. "Seems like you have company tonight; I didn't mean to interrupt."

"Not at all. I just had dinner with Obito and was planning on heading home," Haneda replied.

While Haneda and Fugaku talked, Obito sulked on a stool, thinking, 'This is my house!'

Outside, two more people approached—it was Jiraiya and Tsunade.

"Oh, look who we've run into," Jiraiya chuckled, spotting Haneda inside.

Tsunade ignored Jiraiya's banter and walked straight up to Haneda. She greeted Sakumo and then handed Haneda a necklace.

"Here, it's your New Year's gift."

Haneda looked at the necklace and felt a familiar chakra pulse from it. 'Could this be the First Hokage's necklace?' He was stunned; he never expected Tsunade to give him something so precious. Tsunade had only ever given this necklace to three people before: her brother, her lover, and a reincarnation of her grandfather!

"Do you recognize it?" Tsunade noticed Haneda's expression, curious.

The clan leader recognized the necklace too, exclaiming in shock, "Is that… the First Hokage's necklace? Lord Hashirama's?!"

Hearing this, everyone was stunned—even Sakumo. Only Jiraiya, who knew the background, folded his arms with a knowing expression.

"Just a necklace," Tsunade said nonchalantly. "Take it, kid, but don't break it." She refused to show how touched she felt by Haneda's sincerity.

Obito continued to sulk nearby, thinking, 'It's my house, but everyone's here for Haneda.'

Two more figures approached—it was Minato and Kushina. Minato had originally come to check on Obito, but seeing such a large group, he hesitated.

Kushina, however, spotted Haneda and wished him a happy new year, "Happy New Year, Haneda! And you too, Obito and Kakashi and Tsunade!"

Minato also walked over, "It's not quite midnight, but almost there."

Noticing Haneda's new sword, Minato asked, "Is that your New Year's gift?"

"Yes, Mr. Sakumo and Kakashi gave it to me," Haneda replied.

Minato looked over at the eager Obito and handed him a sword with "Love of Shinobi" engraved on it. "This is your New Year's gift, Obito. Keep working hard and pass the Chūnin exams!"

"Thanks, Mr. Minato! I promise I'll pass!" Obito said excitedly, happy that his teacher had come to see him after all.

After everyone exchanged greetings and chatted, they eventually departed.

Watching Sakumo and the others leave, Grandma said, "So many people came to see young Obito and Haneda today."

"Yes, Haneda has lots of admirers," Obito said, holding his new sword with pride.

"And do you have admirers, young Obito?" Grandma smiled warmly.

Obito thought of Rin, nodded vigorously, then hesitated, "Probably…"

Grandma chuckled and handed both of them small charms for peace. "Here, these are charms for peace I got from the temple. May every year be a peaceful one."
