Chapter 33: CHAPTER 33 - Improvements Complete
"Tsunade-sama, Hyuga Mirai just requested some materials for practicing sealing techniques."
"Tsunade-sama, Hyuga Mirai has already begun experimenting with enhancing medical tags."
"Tsunade-sama—"
"I know, Kimura!" Tsunade slammed the pen in her hand onto the desk, glaring at Kimura as she said, "I'm not going back on my word. You don't have to keep reminding me!"
"That's not what I meant, Tsunade-sama." Kimura couldn't help but chuckle at Tsunade's irritation. Straightening his posture, he said earnestly, "Tsunade-sama, in my opinion, Hyuga Mirai's talent in medical ninjutsu is nearly on par with yours. I believe that within ten years, Mirai-kun will be capable of shouldering the responsibility of Konoha's entire medical system. If you—"
"There's no need to continue!" Tsunade's face darkened as she cut him off, her tone sharp and irritable. Whether it was the Third Hokage or others who were aware of her decision, everyone had tried to persuade her to stay in Konoha. All of them spouted the same reasoning—"for the sake of Konoha." Not one of them considered how this pressure might push her further away from the village she once loved.
Staying in Konoha meant nothing more than training medical ninjas and treating other people's injuries. Even enjoying a drink required maintaining her public image. What was once her place of protection now felt like a prison. If she stayed any longer, she feared she'd collapse under the weight of it all.
Besides, with her hemophobia, she could no longer perform surgeries. Staying would make her nothing but a mascot. Her mind already made up, she planned to leave the village next month once Shizune graduated from the Ninja Academy. No one would be able to stop her.
With that resolution in mind, Tsunade abruptly stood and began walking out.
Kimura blinked in surprise and asked, "Tsunade-sama, where are you going?"
"I'm in a bad mood. I'm going to relax!"
"But you just decided to work on the paperwork today—" Kimura didn't even get to finish his sentence before Tsunade was already out of the office. Left behind, Kimura sighed, gathered up the documents on Tsunade's desk, and carried them back to his own office to handle.
Meanwhile, Hyuga Mirai's progress was coming along quite well. Thanks to the scrolls Kimura had delivered on the application of sealing techniques, Mirai was able to improve the medical tags with remarkable ease. Conducting his research at Konoha Hospital allowed him to eat well and quickly restore his stamina. With sufficient nourishment, his three shadow clones and main body worked tirelessly on refining the medical tags. Within days, the work achieved a significant breakthrough.
After eight days of ceaseless effort, Hyuga Mirai finally perfected the medical tags.
"Using a sealing array in a 3-3-4 formation should perfectly encapsulate Yang Release chakra within this piece of chakra paper," Mirai said, gazing at the palm-sized medical tag in his hand with a satisfied smile. "If I continue the research, I could refine the sealing patterns further or explore ways to reduce the size of the chakra paper. Alternatively, I might shift focus to embedding Yang Release chakra into other materials—like medical uniforms with healing properties or healing forehead protectors."
He paused, considering the limitations. "Internal injuries will still require a medical ninja to guide the Yang Release chakra. Without one present, these tags can only heal surface wounds. Still, that's more than enough."
With these medical tags, field medics could conserve their chakra significantly, needing only to channel a small amount to activate the tags. This innovation could transform battlefield medicine by enabling a single medic to perform multiple surgeries with minimal effort.
This was a massive industry—if developed, it could draw enormous funds from the ninja world. Moreover, advancements in medical ninja tools could act as a catalyst for war. With the assurance of injury care, ninjas would grow less fearful of war itself.
However, such grand prospects were far beyond Hyuga Mirai's current situation. Perhaps in the future, once he had established his own power base, he wouldn't mind delving deeper into the study of medical tools. For now, the perfected Healing Tag was sufficient to satisfy Konoha's upper echelons.
With the improved Healing Tag and its detailed creation process in hand, Hyuga Mirai walked to the office of Deputy Director Kimura. After knocking and receiving permission, he pushed open the door.
Behind a mountain of paperwork, the sharp and efficient Deputy Director Kimura was busy handling affairs. Mirai couldn't fathom how such a small hospital could generate so much work.
"I've completed the improved Healing Tag," Mirai said directly. "Since yesterday, there hasn't been any chakra leakage."
"It's already done!?" Kimura exclaimed, rising from her chair in surprise. It had only been eight days. Though she had always praised Hyuga Mirai's talent, the person standing before her was still just a boy.
The other team tasked with improving the Healing Tag hadn't made any progress yet, but this lone young researcher had already succeeded.
Kimura left her desk and approached Mirai, taking the Healing Tag from his hand. Compared to the half-finished prototype she had seen earlier, this version was significantly smaller—just a bit larger than a palm. The sealing array formed a neat [three-three-four pattern], encircling a bold "Yang" symbol in the center. If not unsealed, the tag emitted no detectable trace of chakra.
It was perfect. Presenting this to the Third Hokage would equate to completing at least three S-rank missions. If Konoha stockpiled enough of these Healing Tags, it would be like having several medical masters on the battlefield.
Kimura's gaze shifted toward Mirai, tinged with complexity. It seemed she had underestimated his potential as a ninja. Perhaps he could become as accomplished as Lady Tsunade—or even surpass her in the future.
"Mirai, come with me to see Lord Hokage," Kimura said. "Researching and perfecting the Healing Tag will surely earn you significant merit."
Mirai paused at her words, deliberating for a moment before replying, "Alright. Shall we go now?"
"Yes, right now." The Deputy Director didn't even bother returning to her desk to address the remaining paperwork. Taking Mirai along with the Healing Tag and its report, she made her way to the Hokage's office.
Not long after leaving Konoha Hospital, they spotted Tsunade walking toward them. A faint flush still lingered on her face from a recent drink.
Mirai's eyes lit up. He waved and called out, "Lady Tsunade, I've saved up a lot of questions to ask you tomorrow!" As he spoke, he held up the Healing Tag, giving it a playful shake.
Then, without waiting for a response, Mirai continued on with Kimura toward the Hokage's office.
Tsunade stood in place, staring after them for a moment. Shaking off the lingering haze of alcohol, she thought to herself, "That little brat was provoking me just now, wasn't he?"
The more she thought about it, the more certain she became that Mirai's actions were deliberate. Anger bubbled within her. Stomping her foot, she growled, "That insolent Byakugan brat!"
---
At the Hokage's office, Hiruzen Sarutobi examined the Healing Tag with visible satisfaction. If Konoha amassed a sufficient stockpile, the void left by Tsunade's absence could be filled. Even in the event of war, they wouldn't need to worry about a shortage of medical ninjas.
What a pity. Such a talented individual belonged to the Hyuga clan's branch family. The "Caged Bird" seal on his forehead alone was enough to deter Hiruzen from recruiting Mirai into the ANBU. Loyalty was paramount for ANBU operatives, but branch family members of the Hyuga clan would always prioritize the main family above all else.
Still, Hiruzen needed to consider other ways to reward this promising young ninja.
