Chapter 11: Between the Ashes and the Corpses 1
"Jaron, since you say that all living beings possess mana, what is its use for animals?"
I was sitting on the grass, drinking water after hunting a group of deer, and I asked Jaron this question.
"Animals do possess mana, but most animals don't know how to use it."
"Since you said most, does that mean there are animals that use mana?"
"Correct, animals that use mana can't be called animals but rather monsters."
"Why?"
I asked, surprised by Jaron's answer.
After a short silence, Jaron replied.
"These monsters possess higher intelligence and extraordinary strength, and sometimes their bodies mutate and change shape to adapt to this supernatural power."
'Now I understand why he called them monsters.'
"So how can I face and fight these creatures?"
"In your current state, you can't. You need to train for years and develop your skills and strength to be able to face them."
"Anyway, don't think about them. It's impossible for you to face one of these monsters unless you go to the middle of the forest."
I listened to Jaron's words and kept these monsters in my memory to stay cautious of them.
(Present time)
'What's happening here? How did the monsters invade the city? Isn't the wall supposed to be impenetrable by monsters? How did this happen?'
I looked at the destroyed wall and the monsters that started running inside the city, and fear completely took over me.
My breathing became faster, and I heard my heartbeats getting louder.
"Hah! Hah! Hah!"
'Breathe! Calm down! Calm down!'
But to no avail, I couldn't control my trembling body.
Boom!
I held my cheek, feeling the heat from the punch that hit me, and I raised my head to look at the person who hit me.
It was Jaron, looking at me with his usual cold eyes, holding my bow and equipment in his hands.
"Get up, boy. Don't let fear control you. Use your mind, not your heart."
I understood what Jaron meant, so I got up immediately, adjusted my breathing, grabbed my bow and equipment, and put them on.
"Thank you. Alright, what do we do now?"
"Let's go to the inner city gate and get away from the monsters."
I listened to Jaron's words, and we ran in the opposite direction of the outer city gate.
I looked at the bodies that filled the streets.
Bodies of children, adults, men, and women.
'Don't look. What's happening here has nothing to do with you.'
I turned my eyes away from them and continued on my way, comforting myself with these words.
We finally reached the inner city gate, but it was completely different from the outer city gate.
There were high walls surrounding the place, unlike the walls surrounding the outer city. These walls were high and well-maintained, and the gate in the middle was made of iron, showing its strength.
"Open the gate! Let us in!"
"Hurry! The monsters are approaching, open the gate."
People were gathered at the gate, shouting at the guards who were on top of the wall, looking down at us.
"This gate will never open. Get away from here and don't attract the monsters to the gate."
The guard, who seemed to be in charge, looked down at us with disdain in his eyes, as if he was saying that the lives of thousands of people had no value.
"What do you mean! Open the gate now! We're going to die."
"At least let my children in! Don't let me in, just let my children in! Please!"
Chaos spread among the people as they screamed and begged the guards to open the gate.
"What do we do now?"
I asked Jaron as fear began to take over my body again.
'Calm down, there's no need to be afraid.'
I calmed myself and looked at Jaron, waiting for his response.
"Follow me."
Jaron headed east along the wall, and we kept walking until we reached the end of the wall.
"This place is the farthest from the monsters. After this chaos, the army inside the inner city will surely intervene to secure the lives of the nobles inside, so we'll stay here and wait."
"What! Is this the plan? The monsters will eventually reach here."
"Do you have a better plan?"
Jaron asked me this question, and I remained silent, not responding.
"Alright, let's stay alive until the end then."
"Yes."
We stayed hidden until I saw the monsters starting to approach us.
"Don't stray from me and help me from a distance."
"Alright."
Jaron took out his spear, assumed a fighting stance, and we waited for the monsters to approach.
In the meantime, I adjusted my gear, grabbed my bow, and prepared an arrow to shoot.
"Get ready! Here they come."
I looked at them as they came towards us with bloodthirsty eyes.
Some of them looked like ordinary animals but larger in size, while others had strange and bizarre shapes.
Some resembled tigers but had bodies glowing with a purple color, some looked like bears but had larger bodies and were engulfed in flames, and some resembled foxes but had multiple tails.
I drew the string of my bow and adjusted my stance.
"Let's go."
Jaron shouted, and I immediately released my arrow.
Whoosh!
