Chapter 16: Chapter 15 Arrival_1
Han Dongchen got up hurriedly after hearing this, taking what was in Su Xiaowan's hands and setting it on the shelf above. He then realized that this elderly woman and the elderly man were together, so he also took the stuff from the man's hands.
Han Dongchen did all this smoothly, still wearing a stern face and not saying a word. But Su Xiaowan looking at Han Dongchen being so adept, silently gave him another point.
After everyone took their seats, the kind-hearted elderly woman spoke up: "Oh, you kids are so kind-hearted, sincere, and enthusiastic about helping others, truly good citizens. Thank you."
Excited, Su Xiaowan replied: "This is my husband. He's a soldier. I just became a soldier's wife. Serving the people is my honor."
She spoke quickly and succinctly, giving the impression of a child who's just been promoted to group leader and has just been complimented for doing a good deed.
Because Su Xiaowan looks young, even though she's 18, her petite figure makes her look like a 15 or 16-year-old. So, talking in such a tone, combined with her looks and expressions, was quite misleading.
The elderly woman, seeing Su Xiaowan's naive and energetic charm, couldn't help but lower her guard and, smiling, turned to look at Han Dongchen. "Good young man, follow Lei Feng's example and do good deeds. You're setting a good example as a soldier. Being a soldier's wife is a great honor. I was a soldier's wife once."
Thanks to Su Xiaowan's enthusiastic help and pleasant conversation, everyone started chatting. Su Xiaowan is a planner; collecting information is crucial for her to make a good analysis. From the first glance, she noticed something different about them.
In Su Xiaowan's view, there are no useless people, just those who can't utilize people well. Networking is very important to her. While she'd just taken a brief look at them and didn't know what they did for a living or whether they could be helpful to her in the future. But from their attitude, she knew that getting to know them could do no harm.
"Chance encounters are fated," Su Xiaowan always believes. The more friends, the more paths. Even though she stumbled in her last life when it came to love, her career was always flourishing, thanks to her social skills.
On the journey, everyone had a great time under the atmosphere created by Su Xiaowan. Despite becoming wiser as they age, the elderly saw no harm in a teenage newlywed girl who still had a naive and romantic view of the world, especially with a respected soldier by her side.
Moreover, Su Xiaowan had a knack for speaking. With years of experience at work, she knew exactly what to say to whom, how to draw them out, and how to establish a connection.
It wasn't long before Su Xiaowan learned from the elderly woman that they were just returning from a funeral in Bin City. To avoid causing any trouble, they had decided not to book sleeper tickets.
She also became aware of their familial background. The woman's last name was Chen, and the man's last name was Wu. They had five children, two of whom were soldiers (although their positions were not disclosed), and the others worked in government departments. Born in Danjiang City, Chen was a teacher, and Wu had been a soldier as well before he was injured and transferred to other duties.
Chatting with Mrs. Chen was quite enjoyable. She was nostalgic, reminiscing about the past, and Su Xiaowan was a great listener. Each response from Su Xiaowan further encouraged Mrs. Chen to continue the conversation, making her happy.
Mr. Wu, too, couldn't help but join in the conversation. Since he retired, he has become more talkative and started chatting with Han Dongchen about his military experience.
The old gentleman had participated in many battles, from his initial enlistment to the last one he fought during the Korean War. He discussed them spiritedly. Han Dongchen, too, was passionate about discussing military affairs and battles, saying more than he typically would and learning a lot from the experienced veteran.
When the train arrived at the station, they exchanged addresses. Mrs. Chen enthusiastically invited Su Xiaowan and Han Dongchen to come to their house for a visit.
After disembarking from the train, it was almost dark. The older couple said their younger son was picking them up in a car. Han Dongchen and Su Xiaowan helped them with their belongings until they got on the car and greeted their son.
The military camp was still some distance from the city, about forty minutes by car. A guard named Liu was there to pick them up.
Liu had been at the train station for a while. When people started coming out from the train, he didn't see Captain Han. Suddenly, he saw Captain Han's tall figure and a petite girl next to him.
As he got closer, he saw the girl had a dark complexion, an oval face, big eyes, and long eyelashes. She was very pretty, a real beauty. Liu thought to himself, is this his sister-in-law?
Before long, they heard from the elderly woman that they were just coming back from a comrade's funeral in Bin City. They were quite disheartened and had decided to not book a sleeper to avoid causing any inconveniences.
They also learned about the households of the elderly couple. The elderly woman's family name was Chen, the elderly man's family name was Wu. They have five children, two of whom were soldiers. Their exact positions were not disclosed (they were quite cautious), and the remaining three worked in government sectors. Chen was a former educator and Wu was a former soldier. It was very interesting that they were all heading for Danjiang City.
Chen was very pleased to chat with them. When people get older, they love to reminiscence about the past. Su Xiaowan had wholly exemplified a good audience. Every single interaction with Chen allowed the elderly to further carry on the topic directed by Su Xiaowan, and they spoke very joyfully.
Wu, the elderly man, also couldn't hold back. He had been part of many battles, and he was thrilled to discuss it from his initial enlistment to his last battle in the Korean War. Han Dongchen was also excited when talking about barracks and battle matters; he talked more than usual and also learned a lot from the old soldier who had been there for many years.
When the train finally arrived at the station, they exchanged contact information with the feeling that their interactions were still not enough. Chen, the elderly woman, also enthusiastically invited Su Xiaowan and her husband to visit them.
After getting off the train, it was almost dark. The two elderly people said that their younger son was coming to pick them up. Han Dongchen and Su Xiaowan carried their things, sent them off to the car, and greeted their younger son before heading their way.
The military camp was some distance from the city, and the ride took about 40 minutes. They were picked up by a guard named Liu.
Liu had been at the train station for a while, waiting for the train to arrive. Many people had already come out, but he had not noticed their Captain Han -- until suddenly he spotted their captain's upright figure, and next to him, a petite girl.
As he got closer, he realized the girl was slightly dark-skinned, had an oval face, big eyes, and long eyelashes. She was beautiful. Could this be his sister-in-law? Liu wondered. Thinking this, he hurried up and saluted, shouting, "Hello, Captain Han."
Then he said with a smile, "Hello, sister-in-law, I'm the guard Liu Zhiqing, you can call me Liu."
Han Dongchen replied with no expression, "Hmm."
Liu still had a smile on his face, but thought to himself: So she really is the sister-in-law. But she's so young! She only looks like she's fifteen or sixteen. Isn't Captain Han cradle-robbing? And this cradle... isn't it a little too small? How could he stomach that?
Called sister-in-law by Liu, Su Xiaowan felt rather embarrassed, her cheeks turning a slight red as she replied, "Hello Liu, I'm Su Xiaowan."
On the way back to the military camp, both Su Xiaowan and Han Dongchen were quiet, with Liu being the only one talking about what had happened at the camp during the last few days.
Han Dongchen had been silent since they got off the train. He was starting to find it hard to see through Su Xiaowan. She seemed like a puzzle to him.
From the day they got married, he first saw her weak and full of sorrow. Then the second time, she was rugged, facing death without fear. When she woke up, she was timid and cautious, cleverly laying a trap for him to fall into. And later, when her wish was fulfilled, her eyes gleamed with mischief.
And today, she was adaptable and making connections everywhere. Including controlling the atmosphere and the subject matter of their conversations, she managed to take care of everyone's emotions. Even he, who didn't talk much, was spontaneously coaxed into saying a lot. Was it really a coincidence? Or was it intentional? If it was intentional, then her skills were indeed no less than those of their logistics officer.
Thinking about this, he was filled with concern. How old was she and how did she grow up to be like this? Which one is the real her?
