My Enigmatic Life

Volume One, Chapter Two: An Unusual House Cleaning (1)

For the first time in a week or so, I had good night's sleep. So good that I sort of over-slept.

"Alright." , I yawn. "First thing is breakfast."

I'm absolutely famished. I didn't eat at all yesterday, and for someone like me, that's akin to a death sentence.

"Right, let's see what we have.... "

The gas is cut, so I can't cook anything. And even if it wasn't, the fridge is unplugged and bare. So a nice and hot breakfast is off the table.

However, I have something stashed away for moments such as this. On the top shelf of the cabinet, there lies a large bag of chocolate disgestives!

I really like chocolate disgestives, so this counts as a good meal to me. Before I know it, the whole bag is empty and some of my appetite is satiated.

"I'm still really hungry."

I'm going to order two pizzas, since I don't feel like going out to get any food at the moment. Now, it's time for me to go through the grievous task of ringing up everyone and apologising. Wonderful.

"Not that I have any right to complain. What I did was wholly stupid."

So.... Who do I ring up first?

*DING-DONG*

"Eh?"

I unconsciously blurt out my confusion. Who could that be? It's definitely not the pizzas. I walk over to the door, and speak through it.

"Who's that?", I ask suspiciously.

"Aniki? It's me."

Hearing that reply, I unwittingly begin to unlock the door. I know that voice anywhere, and besides, there's only one person who calls me that.

Swinging it open, my younger cousin is revealed to me.

"Come in Yoko, it's good to see you."

This is my younger cousin, Yoko Colen. Naoya's younger sister and the second eldest daughter of my uncle and aunt. Easily discernable by her ginger-coloured hair.

"That's what I should be saying, Aniki. You had us all worried!"

She complains to me as she enters. Rightfully so.

"I'm sorry about that. I truly am." , I say sincerely, bowing my head a little, "I won't do it again."

Yoko rests the bag she's carrying down and embraces me. She looks up straight in my face. She seems to be blushing, oddly enough.

"You promise? Not again?"

I nod heavily.

"Promise."

Yoko appears to be satisfied with my apology. She releases me and continues into the living room. I follow after her.

"Oi, did you come here by yourself, Yoko?"

"That's right. I knew you would be here, so I came to see you, Aniki." , she nods.

"So everyone knows that you're here?"

"No. I told them that I was going to the market."

I figured so. I quickly reprimand her, by flicking her on the nose.

"Ouch! Why'd you do that??"

"I did that because you left off for somewhere and didn't tell anyone."

"That's something coming from you, Aniki." , Yoko retorts.

"I can imagine. At least I didn't lie to you lot about where I was going."

With that, I pick up my phone and ring up my uncle. Now, my Uncle Alexander is a Japanophile or a Weeaboo. As a matter of fact, he's the reason why I have a Japanese given name. So he prefers that I refer to him as 'Oji'.

"Hullo, Oji-"

"YOU JACKASS! WHERE WERE YOU, EH?"

My God, that was so loud that I think I may have gotten Tinnitus. Good gosh.

"Listen Govvy, you had us all worried half to death."

I make my reply as soon as my ears stop ringing.

"Yes. So Yoko told me."

"Yoko? Is she there with you?"

"Indeed."

"What?!" ,Oji yells. "Why didn't she tell me that she was heading to see you?!"

I honestly can't tell you.

"I honestly can't tell you."

"Well, no matter. Just be sure to have her home by tomorrow, yeah?"

Eh? That's it? I didn't even get to apologise or anything.

"Oi, Oji-"

"I'm about to watch the cricket match vs the West Indies! I tell you, those boys put up a cracking good fight! See you, Govvy!"

"O-oji I want to apolo-", I babble. " He's gone... Well, it seems like he's fine with you staying, Yoko."

"Good." , Yoko smiles.

She looks rather pleased. I'm glad to know that she's always happy to spend time with me.

"Well, I hope that you're ready to help me out with cleaning this place up. I was supposed to take care of this from last month."

"Not a problem, Aniki."

Alright, let's get started.
