Chapter 31: Training Pt. 2
Aizawa regarded Bakugo with cool gaze, "Would you like to repeat that?"
Instead of backing down, Bakugo doubled down, "Sure, why would we tell everyone exactly how to defeat us?"
"That is the exact purpose of this exercise," Aizawa responded coolly, "Your weaknesses will be exposed giving you no choice but to overcome them or lose to your classmates."
Bakugo clicked his teeth in annoyance but Aizawa wasn't done, "Now Katsuki Bakugo step forward and tell the class your quirk."
For a moment it seemed as if the spikey haired bully wasn't going to move but he eventually rolled his eyes and stepped forward, "My quirk is called explosion, I can make my sweat ignite at will as for weaknesses…."
Bakugo grinned, "I don't have any! And know this, the number one spot is mine and there's nothing any of you can do to stop me!"
"Is that right you wanna be a villain jackass!" Tetsutetsu shouted back, his face contouring with rage, "What the hell gives you the fucking balls to be so arrogant!"
Bakugo's smile broadened as his hands twitched restlessly, "Wanna find out!?"
Tetsutetsu took another threatening step forward as the skin up to his elbows gained a metallic gleam, "Let's do it!"
Then before the situation could escalate any further a heavy pressure descended on the class like a physical weight making everyone sway on their feet unsteadily and Kenji watched as Tetsutetsu metallic vanished.
"Perhaps I wasn't clear enough in my earlier statement," Aizawa's voice cut cleanly through the air as his pin point eyes glowed a piercing read, "I have the power to expel any and all of you at the drop of the hat…I thought I could be nice but it seems that some of you need a firm reminder."
No one responded, the weight pressing down on them made it difficult to do anything let alone speak. Even standing upright was a constant battle with clenched jaws and furrowed brows. Though there was one noticeable exception.
Standing towards the back of the group Kenji's face was far more relaxed than his peers. He could still feel the pressure on his back, but it was little more than a slight discomfort, like a heavy backpack that dug into his shoulders. Feeling something resonate within himself Kenji closed his eyes and concentrated on the sensation.
There was no question that the weight in the air was caused by Aizawa's quirk but just to confirm it Kenji tried summoning his void armor only to feel nothing happen, 'Then if it's not my quirk then why am I not struggling like the others?'
Furrowing his brow in concentration Kenji focused on the weight pressing down on him. It felt distant, like there was a thin membrane separating Kenji from the pressure but it wasn't strong enough to completely hold its shape.
Grasping onto the idea Kenji suddenly imagined a thin black film surrounding his entire body, it was there and not there at the same time, 'It's part of the abyss.'
In the same way Kenji's void armor created a limited space between him and the rest of reality, so did the film surrounding his body. But while his armor existed in its own isolated dimension, the barrier around Kenji's body seemed intertwined with his surroundings, 'Like one image superimposed over another…then should I be able to.'
Opening his eyes Kenji took his index finger and poked the air and watched as it was wrapped in a thin layer of something outlined in a purple hue around the edges.
Aizawa's eyes widened as his eyes settled onto Kenji, and more specifically the strange veil surrounding him interfering with his quirk. All at once Aizawa's mind flashed back to last week, the final day of the admissions.
There were three students left, who had completed the exam as a team. Compared to the rest of the applicants performance they weren't anything outstanding, taken out in the third wave with most of their points coming from clean up and restoration efforts.
For the two girls Himiko Toga and Ochaco Uraraka placing them in class 1-B and class 1-A respectively was a no brainer. While Toga's quirk was powerful, providing a heavy boost to her strength and speed depending on what type of blood she consumed, it was hard to imagine it becoming an outstanding ability.
For Uraraka the situation was almost the exact opposite, it was weak right now, but any quirk capable of manipulating gravity was almost certain to become a powerful tool even if it wasn't combat focused.
The final member of the group however was an absolute curve ball, even from the beginning. His official records were nearly nonexistent, all they could find was a birth certificate, and a record of his emancipation from last year on his seventeenth birthday.
But the true enigma was with Kenji's quirk, he was a late bloomer, a very late bloomer only awakening his quirk three months before the exam. Perhaps it explained his poor performance especially considering the scope of Kenji's quirk, 'Vessel of the Abyss' which apparently gave him the ability to emit and control a tar like substance at will.
On paper it didn't seem like much but after reviewing the exam footage, Aizawa was convinced otherwise. At first Kenji mostly used his quirk as a controller, an archetype Aizawa had come up with that specialized in swaying the flow of battle by hampering their opponents.
As a controller Kenji was good, but nothing special, but after he defeated the griffin Kenji revealed there was far more to his quirk than he was letting on and perhaps even more than he assumed.
Coming to a decision Aizawa nodded to himself as he made up his mind. In the next instant the pressure vanished and a collective gasp rang through the air as his students managed to take a breath without feeling like there was an anvil pressing down on their backs. Meanwhile Aizawa reached into his pocket and pulled out a sleek silver remote, there was a soft click as he pressed a button followed by a much louder rumbling.
