Chapter 26: Emma’s Return
A month had passed since Emma Frost slipped into a coma, and the Hellions had grown accustomed to Sebastian Shaw's harsh leadership. But when Emma walked into the academy one crisp morning, her signature poise and confidence radiating from her, it felt like the weight of the world had lifted from their shoulders.
Inarius was in the training hall, working through a series of strikes with his sword, when he heard the news. Catseye came bounding in, her feline features alight with excitement.
"She's back!" she exclaimed, practically purring with joy.
Inarius froze mid-swing. "Emma?"
Catseye nodded enthusiastically. "She just walked in, like nothing happened. She's fine!"
Relief washed over him like a tidal wave. Without saying another word, he set his sword aside and made his way to the main hall.
Emma stood at the center of the room, dressed in her usual pristine white attire. She looked as if she had never been gone, her posture as sharp as ever. The Hellions gathered around her, their expressions a mixture of happiness and awe.
"It's good to see you all again," she said, her voice cool but tinged with warmth. "I trust you've been keeping up with your training in my absence."
Empath smirked. "Shaw made sure of that."
Emma's gaze flicked to Empath, her lips curling into a faint smile. "I'm sure he did."
Inarius stood at the back, watching her. For weeks, he had worried—about her, about what her absence meant for the team, about whether she'd ever come back. Seeing her now, calm and commanding, he felt a weight lift from his chest.
Emma's eyes scanned the group until they landed on him. "Inarius," she said, her tone softening just slightly. "Good to see you in one piece."
He nodded. "Good to see you back, Emma."
The reunion was short-lived. Shaw appeared not long after Emma's arrival, his presence as imposing as ever.
"Emma," he said, his tone all business, "we have matters to attend to."
Emma turned to the Hellions. "I'll be away for a short while. Shaw and I have some urgent business to handle. In the meantime, continue your training." Her gaze lingered on Inarius for a moment. "And don't slack off."
Inarius nodded, though he couldn't hide his disappointment. She had just returned, and now she was leaving again.
As Emma and Shaw walked out, the Hellions dispersed, murmuring among themselves.
That night, Inarius sat in his room, staring at the ceiling. The dark dreams that had plagued him for so long were still gone, and for the first time in what felt like forever, he felt a sense of calm.
