Chapter 20: The Ability to Evolve Again
Rody looked at Claire gratefully. If she hadn't possessed such an extraordinary ability, he would have spent his entire life in regret.
He also understood why Claire wanted him to keep it a secret. A power like hers was far too precious. If the wrong people discovered it, she'd likely be treated as a living elixir kept captive and exploited.
Claire simply smiled. Saving people had always felt natural to her, but revealing her ability to someone else was a first.
Perhaps it was because Rody had always been friendly, or maybe because he too possessed powers, but she had chosen to take the risk.
"My ability can heal, but for some reason maybe a form of resistance it only works once per person," Claire explained.
"It doesn't matter. I swear this kind of thing will never happen again," Rody said firmly.
"Tony, I have a way to find the mastermind behind this attack, but you'll have to play along," Rody said, smiling mischievously.
"Whatever it takes, I'm in. I won't let that bastard get away with this," Tony growled, his usual smugness replaced with cold fury. He had just cheated death. Now, he wanted vengeance.
"Well, since you're so eager…" Rody suddenly struck Tony in the neck with a sharp chop.
"AH! What the hell, Rody?!" Tony yelped, rubbing his neck.
"Oh, come on! Movies always make it look so easy one chop and you're out cold," Rody grumbled.
Everyone gave him a deadpan stare.
Rody sighed and explained, "Listen, Tony, you need to play dead. If the people behind this think they've succeeded, they'll slip up and expose themselves."
Tony rolled his eyes. "Fine, fine. But your execution sucks." He grabbed a nearby pistol, aimed at his chest, and fired a few shots at his Arc Reactor from a distance. Sparks flew, but the self-protection mechanism prevented any damage.
"There, now everyone thinks I'm dead," Tony declared smugly before collapsing into Pepper's arms in the most dramatic way possible. He even stole a dismissive glance at Rody, just for flair.
Rody clenched his fists, itching to kick Tony. Instead, he had a better idea.
He walked over to the two half-dead assassins, dipped his hands into their blood, and smeared it all over Tony's face. Then, he streaked his arms, neck, and clothes with the same mess.
By the time he was done, Tony looked like he'd been through a slaughterhouse.
"Oh no, he's suffered fatal injuries!" Rody mocked dramatically, barely holding back his laughter.
Tony groaned. "I hate you."
But Rody didn't notice something strange some of the blood on his hands left an indelible mark. His sleeve turned a dull silver-gray, almost metallic.
Most of the guests had fled, but a few had remained, convinced that the most dangerous place was actually the safest. When Rody swept the room with his mental sense, he spotted two unfortunate souls hiding under a table.
It didn't matter whether they'd overheard anything or not.
Rody invaded their minds with his psychic power, wiping out the past two hours from their memory.
It was a crude, forceful method he had only been able to subtly influence perception before, but now he could erase memories entirely. Unfortunately, it would likely leave them with splitting headaches for days.
"You can relax, Claire. They won't remember a thing about you saving Tony," Rody assured her.
Claire hesitated before asking, "You… don't think I'm a monster?"
Rody smirked. "There's no way something this cute could be a monster. Compared to you, I'm the real monster." He made a playful, exaggeratedly evil face, making Claire chuckle.
Claire started to say something else, but Rody suddenly felt his vision blur.
"Sorry… I think I… need… to rest…"
The moment he finished speaking, he lost consciousness.
Using forced hypnosis had drained him. Even with his improved abilities, it was too much. He barely registered falling into a soft embrace, his cheek pressing against something warm and plush
Then everything went black.
---
When Rody woke up, it was two days later.
The familiar sight of a hospital ward greeted him. He quickly extended his mental sense across the room.
Before, he could only feel emotions, but now he could perceive rough outlines of objects. His power had evolved.
On his bedside table sat a small card with elegant handwriting:
"Three months from now is my graduation ceremony. I hope you can come."
The signature at the bottom read:
"A monster friend."
Rody's heartbeat sped up. Claire's face immediately flashed through his mind.
"In three months, I'll definitely be there. But first, I have unfinished business."
His body felt completely refreshed. Though he was starving, his mental strength had grown significantly.
Rody activated his invisibility. It used to take nearly half a minute, but now he could vanish in just ten seconds.
As for his psychic power, it had developed into something entirely new. It wasn't just for mind-reading or illusions anymore. It had become something more… tangible.
He tested it by focusing on a nearby glass cup.
A red glow flickered around his fingers. The ceramic cup's texture started changing, its glossy surface shifting into a dull metallic sheen.
Rody could sense that it wasn't ordinary metal it was an alloy, a hybrid of different elements. It was stronger than steel yet flexible enough to be stretched into a thread finer than a hair.
With some practice, Rody could even turn his clothes into metal and shift them back at will. It wasn't precise yet, but it was enough to serve as instant body armor. His survivability had skyrocketed.
And now, with this new ability, he was even more confident about taking down Obadiah Stane.
