Listen to the Medic-nin

Chapter 14: I know where I belong

I wake up to someone knocking at my door. Very loudly too, with no signs of stopping. Great start to my day.

I groan and try to sit up, only to find Sasuke sleeping and drooling on top of my shirt. Third shirt he ruined, but he gets a pass because of how cute he is. I gently pick him up and put him to the side of the bed. His hands make some grabbing motions, but I resist the urge to pinch his cheeks and go to answer the door.

On the other side is some random ninja, dropping off some of my old belongings that I didn't bring with me from the clan compound, some insurance forms and generally more paperwork. My face sours immediately, and the ninja wisely chooses to leave.

I decide to put away the forms and seal away the items that were brought to me. Once that's taken care of, I begin to unpack the rest of the furniture, bringing out brand new tables, chairs, and kitchen equipment. The noise might have woken Sasuke up as I see him sluggishly stumble to me, rubbing his eyes. I guide him to the newly brought chairs and start cooking breakfast while he settles down.

I kind of fancy some bacon and eggs, but apparently pork's pretty pricey in this world, so I guess I'll have to compromise with, urgh, just eggs and bread for now. Apparently I can't get access to all the Uchiha riches until I finish some paperwork about inheritance or something, and no one likes to do that. Why ruin a perfectly good day by actually working on that stuff?

I suppose that big bag of cash is plenty of motivation to take care of everything soon, so there's that. How did you think the higher ups get the ninja to fill out mission forms? They only gave out like half the pay when the mission was accomplished and will only give the other half after the paperwork is done.

"Here, eat up." I hand a plate of omelets and toast to Sasuke, and add tomatoes for good measure. Personally, I'm a baked beans person, but hey everyone likes different things, and I can tolerate them.

Unless you like anchovies, of course. Might have to hang you for that.

Course, we finish the breakfast quickly, and even though I loathe to do it, I start to fill out some forms about my share of the inheritance. I was an orphan before so I was always kind of poor. After I get this bag, man I'm going to do so many things I couldn't.

I open the envelope containing the paperwork and see a lot of zeros, as well as an entire mansion that once belonged to one of the clan elders I despised. Might just go there and burn it down just to spite him. I can already imagine him seething in the depths of hell, how exciting! But apparently arson is frowned upon by civilians in this world, so my hands are tied. Ruin my fun, why don't ya?

Still, the Uchiha still technically owns an entire street, large compounds and like a hundred or so houses, to only get one mansion is a bit unfair. The rest might just be property of Konohagakure now, or given to Sasuke since he's got that main family clout.

Speaking of which, I see some envelopes addressed to Sasuke, and hand it to him after he finishes his food. He looks at the papers in my hands and immediately frowns.

"Can't I hire someone to do that?" He asks. "Forms are so annoying to fill out! Genin teams can be hired for this, right?"

"No one accepts those missions, Sasuke." Everyone would have offloaded their forms ages ago otherwise. No one's willing to fill in paperwork as a Genin. They probably decided to be ninjas to get out of lame office work and get in the action, and most of them look down on normal desk jobs anyways.

The doorbell rings, interrupting my thoughts. I, of course, ignore it, until someone starts knocking on my window. Persistent, aren't we.

"Can I help you?" I say, irritated. The lack of any morning coffee does me no favors. I have barely been able to function these past few days. At least I did get a good night's sleep, that's the only thing preventing my downward spiral to insanity, to be frank.

I see who's on the other side and try to close the door immediately. Try to, because the prick predicts it and sticks a foot in between.

"So rude, you! What, had a bad time with T&I?" Shinya says, with Shigeru and Yui, my teacher following behind. I'm much more stable compared to yesterday, but the timing still isn't ideal. "Is this how you greet your team? Don't be rude to us, we've known each other for ages! Oh yea, forgot to mention this, but nice place you got here, mind if we come in?"

I stare at the window for a bit. If I really try to, I can probably run away. Then again, my teacher is a Jounin, so I won't get too far if she's chasing.

After a minute or so, I finally give in and open the door. They are lucky that I'm fond of their insufferable asses, really. They grow on you pretty quickly, like a fungus! And you won't even notice until it's way too late.

"That smells nice, Akari." Shinya comments. "Did you make some for us too? I don't think I ate yet before coming here."

"I told you to eat before coming, didn't I? Now you just look dumb." Shigeru replies with a demeaning tone and pulls out several rice balls from outta nowhere. "You're lucky your considerate teammate bought some rice balls for you, so eat them if you really need to."

"Boys, we didn't come here to let Akari have a laugh at you, cut it out." Yui scolds them. The boys quickly turn quiet and both stare at me. Hey, that's not nice. I get that Uchihas are now an almost extinct species, but no need to look at me like I'm in a zoo exhibit.

"Aww, now you're making me self-conscious, is there something on my face?" I touch my cheeks. Maybe some breadcrumbs are still there, who knows? I can't feel anything weird on my face, though.

"Negative, Akari, we're just here to check up with you." Shigeru replies, giving me a worried look. "I'd admit, you don't look as bad as I feared, but you are definitely not in the best shape."

"Physically, I'm more or less recovered, with some…" I fight back a flinch, remembering my blinded right eye. "Permanent injuries." I hear Shinya mutter a 'no shit' under his breath, then he gets smacked in the head by Yui. Ha, totally deserved. If I'm not having a fun time, you don't get to either.

"Akari, you know what we meant by that question." Yui looks at me expectedly. It really is impossible trying to hide something from the one who taught you all your tricks, eh?

"I'm alright mentally, or at least I will be soon, I think. Just sorted out most of my shit and got the crying out of my system. I'll fully recover sooner or later." I give them the answer they are waiting for. They seem to believe me as they visibly relax, relieved by the news.

"That's… better than we hoped. Thought you would still be fucked in the head when I knocked on your door, honestly." Shinya admits and gets smacked in the head again. Already improving my mood, how considerate, my teacher is. "Ow, I get it, I get it!"

"Would you like to join us for lunch, Akari?" Shigeru asks me, and both Yui and Shinya stop their antics. "Someone here didn't eat breakfast, and I can only pack so many rice balls. We can go to one of those restaurants not far from here if you want. The team will be back together and whole again!"

I glance at Sasuke, who's currently peeking out of his bedroom. Seeing my glance, he quickly hides. Is he… trying to be sneaky? I guess he is pretty young, so the attempt could be worse. And hey, I get to see Sasuke's shy side, and it's pretty cute. No wonder he's got so many fangirls in the show. Give it a year or two and he might even surpass the number of fangirls Sora has. could make it a competition.

Ah, but it's probably a dick move to leave Sasuke alone so soon after this shitshow, huh? He probably will be anxious if I'm not here. I would know, since I'm kind of a doctor. Well, I'm a Medic-nin, but it's pretty much the same.

"Nah, I got to take care of all that paperwork for me and Sasuke. Plus, he probably has separation anxiety right now, with his clan, well…" I answer them. They look pretty bummed out, but seem to accept it quickly.

"It's fine, it's fine. I think being next to him is good for you anyways. We can always meet up later!" Shinya's eyes are downcast, now I feel like I kicked a puppy. "Maybe next Sunday? You can probably hire some Genin to keep him company then."

"Sure, sure. I'll be there, don't worry." Next Sunday's more than a week away, so I have plenty of time to finish all my forms about inheritance and insurance and all that jazz. Hopefully, Sasuke and I can function without being near each other constantly by then. The sooner this gets fixed, the better.

Yui and my teammates wave at me and leave the place one by one. After everyone's gone, Sasuke finally comes out of his hidey-hole and clings to my arms. I really ought to deal with this issue, but this does feel nice. Very huggable.

"Oh yea, forgot to mention this yesterday. Sasuke, how do you feel about therapy? Cause after what happened, that stuff's mandatory. Hokage's orders." At his unhappy look, I hastily add, "We can do it together, if you want to. I'll just ask some people to arrange that for us and everything should be sorted." He perks up, and nods after a while. For the meantime, though, he probably will follow me anywhere I go for at least a few more days. It's quite endearing to be honest, so I'm not going to complain.

Still, that's one more person that will worry about me when I go out on missions, and one more person to scold me when I get injured in the future. Another one that will mourn me if I get unlucky and drop dead.

Ah, I'll just have to manage and try my hardest to survive everything that's going to be thrown at me. Either way, Sasuke's someone dear to me now. Did not want to get attached to such a troublesome kid, but I did, so it is what it is. I swear, the amount of people that cares about me keeps on increasing. It's kind of worrying, but also comforting to know that so many people value me. I'm going to have to be even more careful from here on out. Afterall, it's not just my life I'm risking if I get too reckless.

That's way too deep for me to think about. For now, I just have to find a way to get groceries with Sasuke clinging onto my legs. The kid's got a surprisingly strong grip!
