Chapter 10: Chapter 10: Rivalries and Resolutions
The dimly lit office of Coach Genji Kamogawa carried a heavy atmosphere. Sitting across from him was his trusted assistant coach, Haruhiko Yagi, the two men deep in conversation.
"It's a shame Miyata decided to leave the gym," Kamogawa said, his voice gruff with emotion. "That kid had talent, no doubt about it. But I understand his reasoning. After that last spar, he probably felt there wasn't enough room for both him and Ippo here."
Yagi adjusted his glasses, nodding. "It's not just about Ippo's growth. Miyata's got his pride. He made it clear before he left that he'll face Ippo again someday, but only in the pro ring. A man-to-man promise."
Kamogawa leaned back in his chair, sighing. "A rivalry like that can push both of them to heights we can't even imagine. Let's hope Miyata finds his own path out there and that Ippo doesn't let the weight of that promise crush him."
Unbeknownst to the two coaches, four familiar faces were pressed against the door, attempting to listen in on the conversation.
The EavesdroppersTakamura motioned for Aoki, Kimura, and Alex to quiet down as he strained to hear more.
"Man, this is some heavy stuff," Aoki whispered, his voice barely audible. "Miyata's ditching us because of Ippo? That's nuts!"
"Yeah, and Ippo's still walking around all gloomy like he lost his favorite fishing rod," Kimura added.
Alex, crouched behind them, couldn't help but grin. "You guys sure you're not just here for gossip? Feels like a high school drama to me."
Takamura shot him a look. "Shut it, newbie. This is important intel. A champion needs to know what's going on around him at all times!"
Before Alex could retort, the door suddenly creaked open, and the four of them tumbled into the room in a heap.
Kamogawa and Yagi stared down at them with blank expressions. "Care to explain what's so interesting in here?" Kamogawa asked, arms crossed.
The four scrambled to their feet, mumbling incoherent excuses as they backed out of the room.
A Promise MadeLater that day, Ippo sat with Alex in their shared room. The normally cheerful Ippo looked thoughtful, his gaze fixed on the floor.
"Ippo, you okay?" Alex asked, sitting across from him.
"I've been thinking," Ippo began, his voice steady but firm. "After sparring with Miyata, I realized… I want to go pro. I want to see how far I can take this."
Alex smiled at the determination in Ippo's voice. "So that's what's been on your mind, huh? I was actually thinking the same thing. If you're going pro, I'll do it too."
Ippo's eyes widened in surprise. "Really?"
"Yeah," Alex said with a grin. "It'll be fun to see who climbs the ranks faster."
The two of them laughed before heading to the gym to share their decision with Coach Kamogawa.
Breaking the NewsKamogawa looked at the two young boxers standing before him, their resolve clear in their eyes.
"So, you both want to go pro, huh?" he said, scratching his chin thoughtfully.
"Yes, Coach," Ippo said firmly. "I want to test myself against the best."
Alex nodded in agreement. "Me too. We've been training hard, and we're ready to take the next step."
Kamogawa's gaze softened slightly. "You're both talented, no doubt about that. But talent alone isn't enough. If you want to go pro, you'll need to train harder than ever before. This won't be easy."
The two young men nodded in unison, their determination unwavering.
Takamura's Secret TrainingAs they left the office, Takamura overheard the conversation and threw an arm around each of their shoulders.
"Pro, huh? Not bad, you two," he said with a sly grin. "Lucky for you, I've got a secret training method that'll whip you into shape faster than Kamogawa's old-school drills."
"Really?" Ippo asked, his curiosity piqued.
"Yeah," Takamura said, already leading them toward the door. "C'mon, you'll see. It's at my place."
Takamura's "Training Manual"Takamura's house was as chaotic as one would expect, with random boxing equipment, empty food containers, and piles of magazines scattered everywhere.
"Welcome to my dojo," Takamura declared, spreading his arms dramatically.
Alex and Ippo exchanged skeptical glances as Takamura rummaged through a pile of clutter. "Here it is!" he exclaimed, holding up a worn-looking book.
Curious, Alex and Ippo leaned in to get a closer look. Their curiosity turned into shock as they realized the book's contents were far from boxing-related.
Their faces turned red as blood trickled from their noses in unison. "WHAT THE HELL, TAKAMURA?!" they yelled, dropping the book as if it were on fire.
Takamura doubled over in laughter, tears streaming down his face. "You two are too easy! If you can't even handle that, how are you gonna handle the pressure of going pro?"
"Is this your idea of a joke?!" Alex shouted, trying to hide his embarrassment.
Ippo, still flustered, muttered, "This isn't training…"
"Sure it is," Takamura said, wiping his eyes. "Mental training. Builds resilience!"
