Chapter 31: Chapter 31: It's Important to Like What You Like
If Cheng Yi's appearance was inherited from her, his personality definitely followed Mr. Cheng's—indifferent, composed, and wise.
Mrs. Cheng placed Xinan's hand on her own thigh and then removed a jade bracelet, glowing with an emerald hue, from her wrist and slipped it onto Xinan's wrist.
Seeing this, Xinan quickly said, "Auntie, what are you doing?"
Mrs. Cheng started smiling and patted the back of her hand, "Accept it, consider it as a little token of affection from your auntie."
"It's too valuable." One could tell at a glance that the bracelet was expensive.
Yet, Mrs. Cheng insisted, "Nannan, if you don't accept it, does it mean you don't acknowledge me as your mother-in-law?"
Xinan hurriedly replied, "No, not at all."
"Since you recognize me as your mother-in-law, and I acknowledge you as my daughter-in-law, why can't you accept this bracelet?"
Seeing Mrs. Cheng's sincere gaze, Xinan no longer persisted and accepted the bracelet, "Thank you, Auntie."
Mrs. Cheng glanced at Xinan, "Didn't we just talk about this?"
Xinan immediately caught on and sweetly called out, "Mom."
As her voice fell, she saw Cheng Yi and Mr. Cheng come down the stairs.
By then, dinner was ready, and the servants had already brought the dishes to the dining table.
Mrs. Cheng invited everyone to take their seats; Mr. Cheng sat at the head of the table, and Xinan and Cheng Yi sat together, while Mrs. Cheng sat on the other side.
The chefs in the Cheng family were strictly selected masters, not only needed they possess exquisite skills and be proficient in their craft, understanding the ingredients as if they were extensions of their own fingers, but they also had to maintain a good taste among many other factors considered before becoming a Cheng family cook. Therefore, the dishes that came out of the Cheng family's kitchen were very delicious.
Having such a meal, Xinan felt it was a big win.
"Ah Yi, Nannan, don't go back tonight, just stay here, it's so late, and driving isn't safe," Mrs. Cheng said with a loving face.
Hearing his mother's words, Cheng Yi just gave a faint "Hmm."
Although Mrs. Cheng and Mr. Cheng had already been very kind to her, Xinan still felt quite uncomfortable during the meal, with so many dishes in front of her, she didn't know which one to pick.
Just as Xinan was at a loss, suddenly a pair of chopsticks appeared before her, and then, a piece of braised pork appeared in her bowl.
Xinan glanced at Cheng Yi, whose expression remained unchanged as he quietly continued eating, as if he wasn't the person who had just offered her the food.
A sudden warmth enveloped Xinan's heart, and she began to eat the food in her bowl.
After a while, Cheng Yi served her another piece with his chopsticks.
The third time, the fourth, the fifth...
Looking at the increasing amount of food in her bowl, Xinan tugged at Cheng Yi's sleeve and whispered in his ear, "You don't need to keep serving me so much, I can't eat any more."
Cheng Yi raised an eyebrow and said, "No worries, just eat as much as you can."
Xinan looked exasperated...
Although Cheng Yi said that, Xinan, thinking it improper to leave leftovers at someone else's house, ended up forcing herself to finish all the food.
Seeing Xinan's bowl was now empty, Mrs. Cheng spoke up, "Nannan, have another bowl, you see you are so thin, you need to eat more!"
Xinan quickly declined, "No need, no need, I'm already full, you guys continue eating."
Another bowl really would be the end of her!
After dinner, Xinan went to the living room to sit for a while. When she saw the aunt who was cleaning on the side, she paused and called out, "Aunt Zhang?"
Aunt Zhang stopped what she was doing and smiled as she replied, "Miss Xinan." Then, as if remembering something, she corrected herself, "Madam."
Aunt Zhang had worked for the Xi Family for many years and could be said to have watched Xinan grow up. However, after an incident in her own family, she resigned and returned to her hometown, and since then there had been no news of her.
Xinan had not expected to encounter her again in the Cheng Family.
Seeing a familiar face, Xinan felt an indescribable joy and eagerly asked, "Aunt Zhang, didn't you go back to your hometown?"
Aunt Zhang answered, "My husband died, and my son got married. It was boring staying alone in the countryside, so I thought about finding something to do in the city. Just at that time, the Cheng Family was hiring, so I came here."
When she mentioned her husband's death, there was not a trace of sadness in her eyes—it seemed she had come to terms with it.
Even though she spoke with a calm tone, Xinan knew that Aunt Zhang had loved her husband dearly.
In her younger days, Aunt Zhang and her husband had opened a small shop in their hometown. Although it didn't make much money, it was enough to support a family.
They also had a son. Just as life was looking up and their son was reaching the age to start his own family, her husband was suddenly diagnosed with stomach cancer.
The money earned from the shop was nowhere near enough to cover her husband's surgery expenses. Left with no choice, Aunt Zhang went to Jing City to work, changing several jobs until she eventually became a nanny for the Xi Family.
Back then, the Xi Family had not yet fallen from grace, and the salary they offered was very high, giving Aunt Zhang a glimmer of hope.
But sometimes, fate loves to play tricks. Aunt Zhang's husband's condition suddenly deteriorated. Since they had some savings left, she resigned and returned home to take care of him.
She had not expected, though, that her husband would still pass away...
Aunt Zhang sized up Xinan and said, "I haven't seen you for a few years, Madam. You've grown more and more beautiful."
Xinan smiled and said, "Aunt Zhang, you just love to tease me."
"I'm not teasing you. Look at those brows, those eyes, and your figure—you're even more beautiful than before."
Embarassed by the compliment, Xinan said, "Aunt Zhang, you're exaggerating!"
Aunt Zhang chuckled, "I'm telling the truth. Mr. Cheng is really fortunate to have married such a beautiful wife."
She went on, "I see that Mr. Cheng is quite taken with you."
Xinan paused and then asked, "Aunt Zhang, how...how can you tell?"
"When we were eating just now, Mr. Cheng was always looking at you, not willing to take his eyes off you even for a moment. Doesn't that show he likes you?" But whenever Xinan would look over at him, he would immediately look away. If it weren't for a third party observing, one wouldn't notice someone watching them.
"Really?" Xinan truly hadn't noticed.
Aunt Zhang smiled and said, "Child, think about it when you go back."
With that, she was called away to work.
Xinan was somewhat puzzled by her words. Jiang Yurou had also said Cheng Yi liked her, but she felt none of it.
Now that Aunt Zhang had said the same, could it be true that he really liked her?
But if he truly liked her, then why did he reject her confession, say those words to her, and even give her contraception?
The more Xinan thought about it, the more she felt it impossible. In her mind, liking someone meant having eyes and heart full only for that person, not even willing to speak a harsh word to them.
And yet, Cheng Yi's attitude towards her was not at all like how one would treat a person they liked.
So why did everyone think that Cheng Yi liked her?
