Chapter 22 - Chained Body
Leo took a quick break to wear clothes that were slightly less ‘ripped to shreds’, before he kept walking. He couldn’t help but stare at the ring that adorned his left pinkie finger, and the glimmer of yellow light it gave off. Though he couldn’t see the chains that sprouted from it, he could feel them wrapped around him. While they felt uncomfortable, the chains didn’t seem to have any material impact on his body.
“System,” called out Leo.

Looking at his newly updated stats, he noted that his strength dropped by roughly 20 million points. He had noticed walking safely felt easier, as if the eggshells had hit the gym. What really drew his eye was his newfound ability, ‘Chained Body.’
He was happy to finally figure out how his class worked, though he still had some burning questions in his mind. The biggest question was why did the Dark Vision buff pop up for him? Sure it was useful, but what specifically caused it to appear? With that, could he decide what buffs his class gets him, or is it all up to chance?
It took him a second to figure out the meaning of the 1/10 that appeared next to his ability, but looking at his hands guided him to the answer. He realized that he was limited to only 10 unique buffs, a buff per finger as he looked at the ring that began to feel ever so tight.
Leo decided to attempt a test, as he put a hand on the ring and pulled. He focused and used as much force as he could to take it off, even stopping his conservation of power to put everything he had to rip off the ring. Though even as he struggled, he couldn’t budge it off of him. Finally he gave up, realizing that he would need to be more selective with what buffs he chose as it seemed there would be no way back.
Looking around at the nearby scenery as he walked, he saw how useful this ability was at least. While he would still need to rest, no longer being encumbered by sight would make travel far easier for him. Extending his hand out, he was thrilled by just how calming his new eyesight was. It was very different from sunlight, everything felt dark to his eyes yet he still could see with clarity.
Though despite how exciting it is to stare at your hands, sometimes one needs to look up. Looking up, Leo looked at the desert ahead, filled with nothing but sand as far as his eyes could see. He was excited to finally have progressed with his journey as he started to run towards the desert.
What he knew of this part of his journey was that there was practically no civilization or life nearby. The desert was also home to large and powerful monsters that would try to kill Leo with everything they had. This would be the best combat training he could ask for, no casualties and strong enemies were just what he needed to get more accustomed to fighting.
Though even if these enemies were strong, a part of him felt disappointed that he would still need to hold back so much just to make it an unfair fight rather than a slaughter. For now though, Leo would focus on training as much as he could.
The sand underneath him was coarse, each step sending sand flying far overhead. While walking on a hard surface was easy, it was a lot more difficult to walk on sand without having it launch into the sky. Though even if sand was now everywhere, he was still more than happy having finally reached the desert.
He looked up at the rising sun, illuminating the endless sea of sand around him. He ran deeper into the desert, creating large clouds of sand behind him. It took him another hour or so before he reached far enough in that he could no longer see any trace of forest.
Leo had already envisioned what he would do to hopefully draw attention and commence his training, but right before he started he had a notification pop up.
[STALKER WOLF | GAINED 250 EXP]
“Huh,” said Leo, puzzled for a few seconds before remembering his baseball tryout from earlier.
He wondered where exactly the wolf landed, considering just how long it spent flying, but figured it wasn’t worth wondering about.
Leo pulled his arm back and struck the ground with thunderous force, sending sand and himself flying away from the site of impact. Though once he regained control of himself and stood up, wiping sand from his face, he saw that his plan was a success. The pressure of the blow heated up the sand into glass, as he saw glass extending deep below the surface and glass structures standing far higher than him.
Leo looked at his sculpture with pride, noting the size of the crater and the depth of the glass should have sent shockwaves for miles in every direction. He heard a rumbling start underneath the sand, it sounded like something large underground was quickly approaching him.
Then, he heard the same rumbling come from another direction, and then another, as he felt the ground shake from every direction as he realized he may have drawn in more monsters at once than he planned. He decided to worry about the horde later, as he turned his attention to what felt like the closest approaching threat.
He had gained a solid footing in the sand, stopping him from falling over when the beast emerged, causing the nearby ground to shake violently. The first monster to approach looked akin to a centipede with thousands of legs helping it travel through the ground. Though its appearance horrified Leo, as it seemed to have thousands of faces all plastered throughout its body, all letting out a deep groan. The creature charged at him, its largest face leading the charge as it aimed directly at him.
Leo wanted to practice his fighting first, hoping to find a way to reduce the amount of damage even a simple punch would cause. He stared at the beast head on as it surged towards him, moments before it made contact he threw a punch angled up towards the sky.
[Generic Ability: Basic Strike]
Despite how gentle he tried to be, he still couldn’t help but throw out an ordinary punch as guided by Buddy’s training. The centipede was split in half before it ever got close to make contact, though Leo’s angling didn’t destroy all of its body. The sides of its body slid past him, the creature keeping its previous momentum despite its death.
[CENTIFACE | GAINED 2,500 EXP]
Leo looked at the sky and noted the obvious partition between the clouds that stretched out far. There weren’t many clouds to begin with, but removing more didn’t do him any favors as he began feeling just how sweltering hot the sun was.
While staring at the sun, he felt the ground shake heavily once more as he turned around to see his next enemy had already arrived. From the ground protruded a large snake, its body covered in spikes, as it focused on Leo. Before he could plan his attack, the snake made its first move on him.
From its body it shot out spikes in a large swarm, forcing Leo to jump to the side to dodge them. While he thought they would likely not be able to hurt him, in the chance they were venomous he wouldn’t want to risk even a scratch. Though the snake was relentless, shooting volleys of spikes as Leo dodged as fast as he could.
He began running in a circle around the snake, barely able to move faster than the spikes it was throwing out. Though as he dodge, Leo noticed that it shot spikes from head to tail, as most of its head was barren of spikes now.
Leo lept upwards, the snake shooting a trail of spikes after him as he launched himself directly above it. He had assumed that it wouldn’t be able to continue shooting without any spikes available at this angle, an assumption that paid off.
While he fell toward the snake, he saw it open its mouth, seemingly planning to eat him whole. He used the momentum of his fall to give extra heft to his blow, as right before he fell into the snake's grasp, he threw one punch.
The shockwave from this one sent him flying far back in the sky, as he tumbled through the ground until finally stopping. He spent a second catching his breath as he looked back at where the snake once stood, seeing nothing but glass at its location.
Though even if he wanted a break, the increased speed and intensity of the rumbling surrounding him made it clear that he would not be given one.
