Chapter 11: Chapter 11: Autodegradation of Detached Cells
There was no change in form or nature.
No increase in mucus, no additional scales, no alteration in shape or structural integrity...
Merely with the form of human skin and hair.
It managed to approach, or even possibly surpass, the defensive power of many animals' fur and skin.
While maintaining the characteristics of human skin and hair, it raised the defense level more than just a notch.
It was as if a personal force field had been draped over the body.
This was undoubtedly unscientific.
But with Chen Yun's scientific literacy, it was clear he wouldn't resolve this puzzlement in a short time.
All he needed to know was that up to this point, the pauper version of Steel Body had no drawbacks for him.
And it had greatly enhanced his survival ability.
What he needed to focus on now was,
how should he proceed with the collection of biological samples from himself as mentioned in the previous phase of summary and planning?
If he continued to try and extract substances from himself by any means necessary, there should still be a chance of success.
After all, even though he had exerted effort when attempting to cut his skin with a kitchen knife, it certainly wasn't at the level of using his full strength as if to kill.
After all, he was cutting himself.
There was still a bit of fear.
And his nails had become absurdly hard, not leaving a single mark not even when the nail clippers shattered.
Only the hair.
It didn't sense pain and seemed relatively more fragile.
After considerable thought.
Chen Yun decided to continue attempting to cut substances from his body.
He chose the hair, which had no tactile sensation, to cut with all his might.
He was only the pauper version of Steel Body.
He had not suddenly become as hard as rebar steel.
Using a variety of sharp tools to grind and cut should ostensibly allow him to cut off some of his hair.
With that in mind.
Chen Yun took out scissors and started the arduous task of cutting his hair.
The friction sounds of "krick-krack" arose.
Chen Yun continued exerting force without feeling pain.
After about ten seconds.
The hair remained utterly still.
Several seconds later, as if finally reaching some threshold,
the scissors seemed to cut through a bit.
Finally.
After more than forty seconds.
A few selected hairs snapped, caught between Chen Yun's fingers.
Chen Yun looked at the scissors.
His keen vision allowed him to see that the blade seemed slightly blunted.
This made Chen Yun even more aware of the exaggerated changes in his body at the moment.
From the change in his body yesterday until now.
If the incredible world perceived by his refined sense of smell was the most surprising to him,
the thing that made him most aware of his own difference,
then this pauper version of Steel Body could almost compete for second place with his changes in hungerless and sleepless endurance.
After all, such physical toughness.
Its impact was just too direct and dramatic.
Somehow.
It also added a sense of security to Chen Yun, who had been anxious ever since he discovered the changes.
While pondering this.
Chen Yun suddenly felt something unusual at his fingertips.
He discovered that the few hairs he was pinching were rapidly shrinking.
Upon close examination.
The hairs could be seen rapidly turning to ash.
Just as if Thanos had snapped his fingers, they disintegrated into nothingness.
Until the ashes too were extinguished.
Until they were utterly gone.
The whole process took no more than ten seconds, leaving no trace of hair on Chen Yun's hand.
Upon seeing this.
Chen Yun sank into deep silence.
Adhering to a cautious approach, he spent some time and nearly ruined a pair of scissors to get a few strands of hair.
But the result was the same.
The hair self-degraded as soon as it was detached from the body.
Not leaving a trace.
Clearly.
What had just happened was not an isolated case.
But a real mechanism that existed within him:
Detached cells would self-degrade!
"What kind of self-destruction mechanism is this? Is it the work of some microorganism?"
"Could this mechanism go out of control?"
Chen Yun murmured to himself.
Many doubts flashed through his mind.
This self-degradation mechanism had its pros and cons.
On the positive side, the increasingly extraordinary changes he was undergoing would not result in the leakage of biological tissues.
It was a way to prevent in-depth scientific research by others.
However, Chen Yun, who always considered the negatives first, now realized many potential downsides.
For starters.
Would his deoxyribonucleic acid also undergo such a process after leaving his body?
If so, it would mean that he might have difficulty reproducing.
Secondly, does this self-degradation mechanism get triggered as soon as cells are detached?
How is this determined? Could it misjudge?
Could his entire body potentially vanish into thin air due to a misjudgment?
These questions remained unknown.
In silence.
Chen Yun rubbed his temples.
The changes he had discovered from yesterday afternoon to now were too many, and he needed to calm down.
Although the new changes did not completely overwhelm him, they were still somewhat hard for him to accept.
Fortunately, he was calm and rational enough.
He understood that the experiment to test the self-degradation mechanism of detached cells was not over yet.
It wasn't about uncovering the underlying principle of this mechanism.
But at the very least, he had to clarify one of the two concerns he feared the most, the easier one to figure out:
Could he still reproduce?
Although modern young people are not particularly eager to have descendants.
It doesn't mean they can easily accept being incapable.
He had to figure this out.
And to clarify this matter, he needed to extract some of his deoxyribonucleic acid first.
Thinking.
Chen Yun solemnly turned off the camera on his old phone, stopping the video recording.
He then opened a mysterious website "WWW.******.COM".
Looking at the colorful array of titles on the screen, Chen Yun wore a holy and solemn expression.
Compared to his past self, driven by physical impulses, he was now prepared to dedicate himself for the sake of scientific research.
This was a task full of significance.
Not a task driven by physical impulses.
Thinking.
Chen Yun continuously sought justifications in his heart.
······
At one-thirty in the afternoon.
Chen Yun, fully dressed, updated his discoveries on the memo app of his old phone.
[Third Record: 2024.2.29 (the 20th day of the first lunar month)]
[Today's discovery of new physical changes]
[1: Budget version of Steel Body: When sampling the body, it was found that the hardness of the body was beyond imagination, requiring considerable pressure with scissors to barely cut the hair. The skin also possessed a tremendous Defense ability, considering the possibility of accidental injury, further testing was not conducted. The nails were beyond destruction by any current means.]
[2: Detached cells will self-degrade, the safety of this mechanism is in doubt but cannot be tested. Note, detached genetic material will also self-degrade.]
[Summary: It's been deduced, but I may have become inadvertently sterile; I need to calm down.]
Yes.
As the record stated.
It brought him a touch of faint sadness.
He no longer had the desire to continue experimenting for the time being.
He needed to properly calm down.
