Chapter 24: Chapter 24
Leaving the cave through the large opening to the right, Lara looked around the dense vegetation. Jonah asked, "What are you looking for?"
Lara replied, "The plants that are described on the slate. Even though it's not a miracle cure, it's good to have them to put on your wounds."
As Jonah was surveying the area, he remembered the day before their departure. He recalled Lara and Tony hanging out and making jokes about a guy named Lukas. "Who is Lukas? I was too engrossed in my spirit to remember or ask."
"Nice way to say you smoked too much weed," Lara teased. Yesterday, Tony had brought weed to the manor, and the three of them had smoked it together. They only stopped when Winston noticed Lara carrying Tony in one hand and Jonah in the other, running around while they were striking Superman flying poses and screaming that they were flying. Lara responded, "Some duke heir creep was obsessed with me, and after my 18th birthday, he stopped chasing me and started going after a duke's daughter who is 14 years old."
Jonah interrupted, "Who would stop going after someone when they tur…" but stopped mid-sentence, realizing, "Why wouldn't such a guy be in jail?"
Lara, who had found all the herbs, said, "He is still a noble, and while his family is losing money, his father is rich enough to protect him." She handed Jonah the plants and added, "These are the plants you need to look out for."
"That's pretty fucked up," Jonah remarked before taking the plants and examining their appearance carefully before placing them in his backpack.
After some more trekking, they decided to set up camp and sleep as night approached.
That night, Lara dreamed. She was a little girl, playing and even climbing up the manor. She was playing a game in a room with large statues, trying to open a door to find her mother Amelia's bracelet. After finding it, she heard a gunshot and ran into her father's office to see him dead on his desk, then she passed out.
Lara woke up abruptly, as if from a nightmare. Jonah, who was roasting some meat, asked, "Did you have a nightmare?"
Lara replied, "Yes," before sitting up abruptly. "It's strange—I never dreamed of my childhood."
Jonah, who was quite spiritual, said, "Maybe something here is provoking it. From what I understand, we're here to stop and eliminate the guy who ordered the kill on your father. So maybe this is provoking it, and maybe something else."
After they finished eating, Lara and Jonah resumed their journey. They arrived at a mud road nestled between Amazonian hills and heard an armored car with a machine gun on top struggling in the mud at the entrance of a small area that had a cave entrance.
Lara looked intently, and with her superior vision, she discerned that these men were Amaru's forces—pure Trinity soldiers with no T.O.M.B. operatives undercover.
That was the issue with Amaru's forces: most of them were pure fanatics aiming to recreate or control the world like him. Therefore, T.O.M.B. did not attempt to infiltrate his ranks to avoid the risk of Amaru discovering their presence.
'Konstantin was right. Amaru brought only his most loyal forces here,' Lara thought. 'Considering Paititi is his hometown, he did not want to risk less loyal forces learning about Paititi.'
Lara turned to Jonah and said, "You can kill these guys. They're just pure Trinity forces. Let me go first."
Lara hid close to a hill wall covered with plants just as a Trinity truck drove by. The Trinity soldiers were ready to fire but stopped when they realized it was also Trinity forces.
One soldier began walking down the mud path. As he passed by Lara, he didn't have time to blink before an icepick was plunged into his throat, pinning him in the plants.
Lara swatted away the blood on the icepick before approaching the remaining soldiers.
Seeing a path to the left, Lara decided to go down it. She noticed a man above her with his back turned. Without hesitation, she jumped onto the ledge of the stone wall, drew her icepick, and stabbed him right in the back right through the spine before throwing him down. She then jumped onto his head, stomping hard with her boots. After that, she jumped back onto the ledge and climbed up. Using some plants as cover, she assessed the situation and saw that the only option was to get under the armored car.
'Fuck it, we're going gun blazing, I don't want play in the mud right now,' Lara thought as she drew her pistols. Noticing this, Jonah, who was using the armored car as cover, also took out his shotgun. Lara quickly took cover right beside Jonah.
Seeing that there were three guys behind the armored car, Lara whispered, "Throw a frag behind the car."
Jonah nodded, grabbed a grenade and charged it, and threw it behind the car.
At the same time, one guy approached the side of the car. Lara surprised him by delivering a powerful kick to his stomach, throwing him to the ground.
"BOOM!"
Before the others could react, the grenade exploded, killing the three men. Two guys who were close to some boxes next to the car had no time to react because Lara headshot them. After that, she also shot the man on the ground.
Going around a large hole in the ground, Lara jumped onto a ledge to enter the cave. Suddenly, a Trinity soldier who had been hiding emerged and aimed an assault rifle at Lara's head. Before he could even press the trigger, his head was blown apart by a shot from Jonah's Decastrike shotgun.
"Nice one," Lara said as she got up.
Jonah replied as he rubbed his shoulder, "Just saved your ass from death."
"Well, that's your job as my bodyguard," Lara retorted.
Suddenly, a man with a pistol, charged at Lara shouting, "Oh n...!" But before he could even aim his weapon, Lara shot him right between the eyes.
"I am the fastest hand in the west, bitch!" Lara exclaimed, blowing on her pistol. Since returning from Siberia, she had trained specifically to draw her pistols as quickly as possible. With her body operating at the level of a super soldier, she was extremely fast.
After crossing and exiting the cave, Lara could hear Latino music. "Follow me!" she called to Jonah before sprinting down the path ahead.
After some running, Lara spotted a small village beside a river, surrounded by the jungle.
