Chapter 52
Werner Alton, the greatest genius in history and a member of the honorable heroes, was kneeling and being punished. He was usually someone that even the nobility couldn’t treat lightly, but now he was scratching the back of his head and speaking in an embarrassed tone.
“But I’m busy…”
However, Werner stopped talking when he felt the killing intent and angry gaze. Although Werner was in a posture of reflection, he didn’t feel the slightest bit sorry. It might have been wrong to crash into the lab wall, but he didn’t think it was his fault that his friend was changing clothes at that exact moment. Instead, he seriously analyzed that his friend should blame herself for changing clothes when he could have shown up at any moment.
“Straighten up.”
But what could he do? Werner was the one at a disadvantage, and the friend he needed information from was the one with the upper hand. It was an unspoken rule in the human world that the disadvantaged party had to bow down. Werner thought he was following this unspoken rule as he stood up.
The girl in front of Werner had sky-blue hair and emerald eyes. She gave Werner an uncomfortable, prickly stare and sighed.
“So, why did you crash into my lab?”
“The procedure to enter your magic tower is so complicated and annoying, with all the paperwork and waiting time…”
The girl’s answer was so full of madness that she ruffled her hair in frustration.
“What?! I gave you a pass that lets you bypass all that! I told you to always carry it with you!”
“But it’s too cumbersome to carry around, so I left it at home.”
“You can just wear it on your belt! Why do you keep blowing up my lab walls?! This is the 48th time!!! My lab is under construction 365 days a year because of you!!!”
“It’s kind of my fault…”
“It’s your fault!!! Please carry the pass with you!!!”
“But…”
Werner covered his mouth with his long robe and turned his head slightly, speaking in an embarrassed tone.
“It’s a gift from you, and I can’t lose it, Lorcha.”
“What… what?”
Lorcha’s face turned red. She thought it was unfair for her friend to say such things in that position, with his handsome face. In the end, Lorcha couldn’t stay mad at him. He didn’t want to lose the gift she had given him, and he didn’t realize how it would sound. Werner was brushing off the dust from his clothes.
“So, what’s this clue you found?”
“Ah… that… clue, right?
Lorcha took out a key from her pocket and started searching through the safe. Eventually, she took out a gray cloth from the safe and placed it on the table.
On the gray cloth was a large circle formed by 12 small black circles. Werner’s expression became fierce for a moment, and Lorcha flinched. It wasn’t the usual expression he made when he was annoyed or the expression he made when he was in a good mood.
“Werner…”
“Sorry, I startled you.”
“Are you going alone? Just in case, I’ll come with you…”
“No, I’ll go alone. These guys are real scumbags, and it might be dangerous.”
“Then why don’t you ask Lord Zig or the other heroes for help?”
Werner’s heart sank. If he explained this symbol, they would ask how he knew about it… and then he would have to explain why.
He didn’t want to talk about his background, especially the memories of his siblings that he didn’t want to remember. The only person he had confided in was his trusted friend.
“Lorcha… you’re the only friend I have among the wizards.”
“Why are you like this? It’s so cringy.”
“I really like you.”
“What…?”
Lorcha’s face turned red again. First, she blushed from anger, then from seeing Werner’s embarrassed face, and now from hearing his embarrassing words. Werner, who was overworking Lorcha, spoke to her.
“You’re the only one who understands me, the only person who won’t hate me after hearing that story… But not everyone is like you.”
“But Lord Zig and the other heroes will understand…”
“I don’t want their understanding or sympathy. I just… want to be with you.”
“Sigh… I understand. Since it’s you, you’ll be able to handle whoever it is quickly.”
“I’m glad you understand.”
Werner walked towards the wall that he crashed into.
Lorcha chuckled and said,
“Don’t get hurt, be careful.”
“Thanks for the clue, you must have spent a lot of money to investigate this, and you’re just letting it go.”
“What do you mean?”
“… Wasn’t it free?”
“Free? There’s no such thing as free in this world, friend.”
Werner felt burdened by the thought of paying for it. He wasn’t short of money, but just thinking about going through all the procedures, from calculating the amount to paying it, made him sigh. As he wondered if there was a better way, he remembered the time when the thief Squall stole a national treasure-level robe from another kingdom and gave it to him as a gift, and the repayment she had asked for.
Since the robe was of national treasure-level, he thought that the repayment would be enough to cover the claim amount and have some left over. Werner approached Lorcha.
“What? Do you still have something to do?”
Suddenly, Werner kissed Lorcha on the cheek. Lorcha’s face turned red, and she almost fell because her legs went weak, but she managed to lean against the table and avoid a major accident.
“What… what are you doing?”
“Repayment.”
“You crazy…”
.
.
.
He was rubbing his back, feeling wronged. He had just repaid her in his own way, and now she was hitting his back.
“When Squall stole the national treasure-level robe, she asked for a kiss on the cheek as repayment, and I did it without hesitation…”
He thought he had given a worthy repayment for the national treasure-level robe, but now he was being repaid with a hit on the back, and he felt that there should be some change left over.
“She’s so violent. I wonder if she’ll even be able to get married…”
Werner was worried about his friend’s marriage prospects, not realizing that she was fretting in her lab about not being able to get married. He wasn’t even aware of what he had done, probably because the heroes didn’t want to teach the youngest about such an embarrassing topic.
“It’s about time we should see something…”
Werner stood up and focused his vision to look into the distance. He saw the target in the distance.
He had been wandering around because he didn’t know who the culprit was, but now that he knew, it was easy to find the location by following the traces.
The entrance, which looked like a giant cave, was blocked by an iron door reinforced with various magic. Werner placed his hand on the cold iron door. He thought it was laughable that they were still sealing the door with such a cute trick, and he began to chant a spell.
“Freezing cold, freeze everything in the universe.”
Werner froze the iron door, along with the various barrier magic on it. Then he removed his hand and began to chant another spell.
“Iron, break everything that stands in my way.”
His fist, which had turned into iron, struck the frozen iron door. The door, weakened by the freezing, shattered like a cookie hit by a fist.
Werner stepped on the remains of the door and entered. A few people who sensed the commotion greeted him. As Werner had expected, the people inside were wearing the shabby cloth with the symbol. He remembered it well from his childhood, when he had seen it several times.
The one wearing the cloth with the symbol on his headgear spoke.
“Who are you! How dare you intrude here without knowing what this place is!”
Werner evaluated that the dialogue was also third-rate. Cold air began to gather around Werner. He kindly answered the question, thinking that he should at least answer before killing them.
“Oh, I know. It’s one of the hideouts of those bastards called the Black Round Table or something.”
The person who was shocked to find out that their secret organization had been exposed spoke in a trembling voice.
“How do you know so much about us?”
Then Werner remembered that he had been asked about his identity, so he kindly answered.
“Me? I’m part of the family of the kid you kidnapped… and the one who’s going to teach her magic… It’s complicated…”
Werner waved his hand, and the freezing cold froze the legs of the minions who greeted him.
“Anyway, I’m an incredibly powerful wizard.”
