Chapter 7: I have a plan!
London, Diagon Alley.
At one of Gringotts' many counters...
"I've always been curious—how do goblins perceive wizarding magic?"
The goblin smiled faintly, revealing his sharp teeth.
"We goblins have our own magic, which is quite different from that of wizards. Our magic is more focused on craftsmanship and metalworking, particularly in the creation and protection of treasures."
A blond-haired boy listened with rapt attention.
As an almost-eleven-year-old wizard,
he seemed far less threatening, which explained the goblin's lowered guard.
The two of them had been chatting for nearly half an hour now.
The boy continued his questioning,
"And how is your magic different from wizards'? For example, how do you cast those complex spells?"
This question was a step too far.
The goblin's expression instantly turned guarded, his demeanor cooling.
"Why are you so curious about these details?"
There was a trace of displeasure in his voice.
It was clear the boy's question had crossed a line.
Realizing he might have gone too far,
the boy hurriedly tried to explain himself.
"I'm just very interested in different magical systems, especially goblin magic..."
The goblin's face grew even darker.
"Our magic is our secret; it's not something we share freely."
His tone was cold,
"And your question has already crossed the boundary."
Devero felt a wave of awkwardness wash over him and quickly apologized.
"Sorry, I didn't mean to offend you. I was just—"
"Enough!"
The goblin cut him off, his voice firm.
"Leave. Stop wasting my time."
"Alright, alright... my apologies..."
The boy backed out of Gringotts, still murmuring his apologies.
"Just my luck!"
Devero grumbled to himself.
He had hoped to learn something about goblin magic.
After all,
now that he was officially a magical prodigy,
there was no reason for him to limit himself to wizarding magic alone.
Imagine if he could master goblin magic—
how amazing would that be!
He had even considered whether goblins possessed any unique traits he could learn from.
But after examining them carefully, he felt disappointed.
Just like most wizards,
their primary trait was a common [Magical Aptitude], a blue-tier trait,
nothing extraordinary.
There was no breakthrough to be made there.
So he'd decided to chat them up instead.
Even though his attempt had failed,
Devero couldn't help but let his imagination wander.
If he could learn goblin forging techniques,
he could someday create his own version of the Sword of Gryffindor.
With such a weapon in hand,
what need would he have to fear Voldemort?
He could directly become the Swordmaster of Gryffindor!
But reality was far less accommodating.
His probing had yielded no useful information.
Just as the original story described,
goblins were thoroughly self-serving.
Learning their sword-forging methods was next to impossible.
Still,
Devero wasn't one to get discouraged so easily.
He had other plans in mind.
For example,
he could learn wandless Apparition from house-elves,
or celestial divination from centaurs.
Both magical practices were incredibly intriguing.
Speaking of which,
Devero had spent the past few days thoroughly exploring Diagon Alley.
He had wandered in and out of various shops—
from Ollivander's Wand Shop to Florean Fortescue's Ice Cream Parlour—
leaving no corner untouched.
During this time,
he had also successfully loaded Ollivander's [Innate Wandmaker] gold-tier trait.
Instantly, his understanding of wands improved significantly.
He even developed a new hobby of reading books about wandmaking at Flourish and Blotts.
However,
despite his efforts,
his Secret Realm exploration progress was stuck at 58%.
Devero suspected the remaining 2% was tied to Knockturn Alley.
If only he could enter that dark and mysterious place,
he was sure he'd quickly gather the remaining progress.
By observing other wizards casting spells on Diagon Alley's bustling streets,
and with the help of his perfectly matched new wand and study materials,
his spellcasting abilities had improved significantly.
For example,
the Levitation Charm now came to him as easily as breathing.
Still, entering Knockturn Alley remained a dangerous proposition.
Who knew if a dark wizard might suddenly jump out,
capture him for experiments, or worse?
Devero had no intention of walking into such a situation unprepared.
At the moment,
he didn't even know a single counter-curse.
If confronted by a dark wizard,
he'd have no means of defending himself.
Although it was a time of peace,
there was no guarantee that a malicious wizard wouldn't cast a dark curse in broad daylight.
Devero decided it was wiser to wait before venturing into Knockturn Alley.
After all, he would soon be heading to Hogwarts.
There, he'd have plenty of opportunities to study curses.
Not only would he learn defensive spells,
but he'd also master some essential offensive techniques.
That way,
when he eventually explored Knockturn Alley,
he'd at least have some means of protecting himself.
Of course,
if Professor Snape were willing to accompany him to Knockturn Alley,
that would be the ideal scenario.
Snape, with his deep understanding of dark magic,
would make Devero feel much safer.
However,
Devero doubted such a thing would happen.
Professor Snape was notoriously cold and stern.
The likelihood of him voluntarily offering to take Devero there was practically zero.
With no way to advance his Secret Realm exploration progress for the time being,
Devero spent most of his time at the Leaky Cauldron,
Flourish and Blotts,
or simply wandering the streets of Diagon Alley.
The Leaky Cauldron was always abuzz with gossip.
Devero enjoyed sitting in a quiet corner,
listening to wizards discuss the latest magical news and oddities.
Strangely,
he had yet to encounter Harry Potter.
Perhaps it was a matter of timing,
or maybe Harry simply wasn't in Diagon Alley at the moment.
Devero was very interested in meeting the Boy Who Lived.
After all, Harry was destined to be the savior of the wizarding world.
Devero was curious to see what kind of traits Harry might have.
He could hardly wait to find out.
As for his aimless wanderings through the streets,
they served a very specific purpose: collecting traits.
Since missing out on a purple-tier [Magical Cooking] trait on his first day,
Devero had successfully loaded a new trait from Madam Malkin:
[Magical Tailor (Purple): Naturally gifted in using magic for tailoring and clothing design, with the ability to quickly master garment-making techniques.]
It was a fantastic life-skill trait.
Without hesitation, Devero loaded it,
and soon, he had completely revamped his old clothes,
making them look as good as new.
Besides the Leaky Cauldron and the streets,
Devero's other favorite spot was Flourish and Blotts.
The shop's shelves were packed with second-hand books,
and Devero loved rummaging through them for useful knowledge.
Thanks to these books,
he had quickly mastered spells and potion recipes that even upper-year students would struggle with.
However,
he found himself lacking talent in Transfiguration.
No matter how hard he studied,
it felt like the most tedious subject of all.
Clearly, he'd need to load Professor McGonagall's trait at Hogwarts
to improve his skills in that area.
As he planned his next steps,
Devero began making his way from Gringotts back toward the Leaky Cauldron.
Diagon Alley's streets were bustling with activity.
Shop signs shimmered in the sunlight,
and people passed by in an endless stream.
As Devero walked,
his eyes scanned his surroundings,
hoping to discover something interesting.
"Witches and wizards, enhance your potion-making skills today! Visit the Diagon Alley Herb Shop for the finest Bubotuber roots!"
Suddenly,
a loud voice caught his attention.
Devero stopped in his tracks
and turned toward the source of the sound.
It was a quaint herb shop with a slightly weathered wooden sign swinging above the door.
The sign read: "Fenny's Herb Shop."
"Bubotuber roots?"
Devero murmured, repeating the words.
A glint of excitement flashed in his eyes,
and his lips curled into a mischievous smile.
He had a plan!
