Chapter 403: Chapter 403: That Kingdom
"Merpeople?" Patrick looked at the photo Murphy handed over, glanced at the ugly corpse on it, and frowned, "Was this thing the killer?"
Recently, several coastal cities in Britain had experienced vicious murder cases where Muggles were gutted, dying in extremely gruesome ways, causing great panic in society. Therefore, as the president, Patrick was also aware of this issue.
He had thought it was some extremely vicious criminal, but it turned out to be a magical creature.
"These merpeople have very low levels of magical power, making it impossible for us to continuously monitor them. The Aurors realized merpeople were attacking humans only after discovering that wizards were being killed, and upon further investigation, they found that Muggles had also been attacked."
"No wonder the crime scenes all had a fishy smell and a lot of water traces; they must have entered the cities through the sewers," Patrick said. "But these creatures don't have legs, do they?"
"Transforming a merperson to have a pair of legs isn't particularly difficult. The stories about mermaids originate from this," Murphy explained. "However, their mutations might not be due to a wizard's magic but from another power."
"You mean…" Patrick looked at Murphy, who nodded in confirmation, then puzzledly added, "But why? What benefit does this bring them?"
"They're asserting their presence," Murphy said. "They want to make more people aware of the existence of magic, thereby accelerating the resurgence of magical power."
Murphy then handed a few more photos to Patrick.
The first photo showed a beach with a giant tree of light several dozen meters tall, with people kneeling and praying around it.
The second photo depicted the sky where clouds formed a giant eye overlooking the earth.
The third photo showed sea fish forming a giant cross several hundred meters long.
"Their power is still weak, so they can only create these illusion-like 'miracles' to attract Muggles' attention. But as the resurgence of magical power accelerates, they will have more and more methods at their disposal. I've heard that the frequency of believers from various religious sects claiming to have seen gods in their dreams has increased dozens of times over the past."
"What can I do about this?" Patrick asked.
Murphy sighed, "It's a matter of faith; there's not much you can do."
Atheists are a minority in this world, accounting for less than one-fifth of the total population. The vast majority of people believe in one or several deities to varying extents.
Even in Russia, despite Murphy's efforts to crack down on religion, they could only ensure the purity of government and official institutions, with the majority of the population still being believers.
"Let's not talk about this. The Beautiful Country is initiating a trade war again; how do you plan to respond?"
After the Russian missile incident, the Beautiful Country has been vigorously promoting the threat from Russia, and Britain, as Russia's ally, has also been dragged into the sanctions list. This time, the Beautiful Country rallied a group of followers, including various European countries, to impose punitive tariffs on Britain several times over, resulting in Britain's inability to sell not just umbrella-related electronic products but even a bottle of whisky.
Patrick was also under tremendous pressure. His domestic actions had almost offended everyone possible, facing the risk of assassination at any moment. But with the Beautiful Country's actions, Britain's foreign trade was reduced to just the one channel with Russia, affecting even ordinary people significantly.
"Lock down finances and develop domestic demand," Patrick sighed. "Fortunately, the Augus plan is gradually getting on track, and key industries have been gradually taken back into our hands. We still have good control over the domestic market."
Murphy nodded, "I have a suggestion."
He took a map and pointed to a location in the east, "Russia is already making contact there. You could try as well. After all, we're essentially in the same camp now. The market is large enough to solve problems for both Britain and Russia, and it's still in the early stages with plenty of potential to be tapped."
"The Northern Sea Route has shown some promise, and I even plan to provide them with magical technology. If we can properly integrate our mana web with theirs, using the Floo Door, we could establish a new global trade network."
Patrick realized and then asked, "But they had a good relationship with the Beautiful Country before... Wouldn't they worry about offending the Beautiful Country and hesitate to cooperate with us?"
"Ha," Murphy chuckled, "You don't understand that nation. They're not scared easily. Plus, they value loyalty. There are old ties with Russia, and if they have to choose between us and the Beautiful Country, I believe they'd be more willing to stand with us. Of course, knowing their way of doing things, they'd probably take advantage of both sides."
"You're familiar with them?" Patrick asked.
"Somewhat," Murphy smiled. "Moreover, cooperating with them has another crucial reason."
"The influence of deities on the secular world largely manifests through faith. And that nation is even more thoroughly atheistic than Russia."
Patrick nodded, "I understand, I'll give it a try."
After discussing this, Patrick remembered another matter, "We've caught quite a few spies from the Beautiful Country recently, and others from different countries too. They're all here for the umbrella and other magical technologies. Regarding the resurgence of magic, they must have some guesses."
Murphy nodded, "Everyone's not foolish; this matter can't be kept secret forever. Our secrecy policy can only delay the full revelation of the truth. But for now, their stance should be similar to ours, to gain more advantages; they'd likely keep this matter within a small circle rather than fully disclose it."
"I suspect the resurgence of magic will eventually become a tacitly agreed secret among the major powers."
"Can this process really not be stopped?" Patrick asked.
"Unless I can find the method used to seal the deities before, it might serve as a reference to drive them away again," Murphy said. "But for now, there's no clue. And as more people become aware of the existence of magic, the possibility of stopping the resurgence diminishes."
"All we can do now is prepare for the response."
"For the Muggle society, you don't need me to remind you too much. The Augus plan and the nationalization of the economy help stabilize society during this extraordinary period and are beneficial for the future. We must persevere."
"We also need to start focusing on ideology. I heard the Beautiful Country's people are already discrediting the research on void particles. Even the enemy recognizes the importance of the battle for public opinion; how can we not be prepared?"
"However, our propaganda should still focus on materialism and rationality. Humanity's thought might be our ultimate battleground. Though it's difficult to reverse people's faith immediately, at least we should let them know there's another voice."
"As for other peculiar phenomena, just leave them to the Countermeasures Bureau."
"Recently, the Transformation Research Group has developed many new technologies. The Countermeasures Bureau's strength has improved significantly."
