Ghost Slayer: My Wife Kanao

Chapter 12: ch12

After packing up everything, Sam Miller returned to the door. After such a long time, Kanao Tsuyuri should have finished taking a shower and changing clothes. Moreover, there had been such a big commotion in the inn, and it was no longer possible to stay there for long.

He knocked on the door, waiting for Kanao's response. But after waiting for a while, he still heard nothing, which made him frown slightly. After hesitating for a moment, he decided to open the door.

The folded clean clothes were still quietly placed on the table, and the hot water remained untouched. This made him frown as he looked at Kanao.

The little girl was curled up in the corner, watching him with her beautiful but lifeless purple eyes.

"Why didn't you take a shower and change your clothes?" he asked gently.

Kanao didn't respond to his inquiry. Sam had adapted to Kanao's current demeanor; she was more like a puppet on a string, completely without her own thoughts.

He could only help her himself.

"Let me wash it for you," he said softly.

Although there are differences between men and women, Kanao is just a child now, so there is no need to care so much. Besides, he is Kanao's fiancé.

His inquiry did not get a response. He smiled helplessly, knelt down slowly, and hugged Kanao.

As he removed her shabby clothes, revealing the girl's petite body and abnormally pale skin, he noticed how frighteningly thin she was, almost skin and bones. Her skin bore various scars and traces of beatings.

Seeing this, the boy's golden eyes beneath the bamboo hat flashed with low-pitched annoyance. He tried to suppress the anger rising in his heart. If he hadn't seen it with his own eyes, it would be hard to imagine that such cruel parents could exist in the world. The viciousness of the human heart is sometimes more terrifying than ghosts.

He didn't say anything but gently used warm water to remove the stains from Kanao's body.

"In the future, no one will bully you. I promise," he said softly.

The dull purple eyes of the girl in the bathtub blinked. In her limited memory, it had been a long time since she was treated so gently.

He scooped hot water with a ladle and started pouring it over Kanao's head. "Close your eyes," he instructed softly.

Perhaps due to not having showered for so long, Kanao's hair was almost stuck together, making it very difficult to wash and requiring a lot of hot water.

Whether in his previous life or this one, helping someone bathe was something he had never done before. It seemed to keep him busy, but it was finally done.

When the filth was removed, the girl's thin skin revealed a bit of brilliance like beautiful jade, though her emaciated form showed no beauty.

He put her in clean clothes and dried Kanao's hair with a towel. Kanao's appearance fully emerged before him. Her dusty little face was washed clean, her features were delicate, and her skin was like porcelain. It was hard to imagine that a person's skin could be so fine.

However, due to long-term malnutrition and her parents' beatings, the girl's figure was too thin, her skin was abnormally pale, and her shriveled body greatly diminished her charm. Even so, it was clear that Kanao would grow into a beauty in the future.

Seeing the newly cleaned Kanao, a gentle smile appeared at the corner of Sam's mouth. He rubbed Kanao's head. Perhaps because of washing, her hair looked much smoother, though it was still a bit dull.

"We should go," he said softly. With such a commotion in the inn, it wasn't suitable to stay any longer. If it weren't for Kanao taking a bath, he would have taken her away long ago.

As he prepared to leave, not expecting any reaction from Kanao, he naturally took her little hand. But immediately, he froze. The girl's footsteps didn't seem to follow, and there was resistance as he led Kanao away.

Turning around with some doubts, he saw Kanao's purple eyes looking at him. Then, to his surprise, Kanao slowly stretched out her little finger and pointed to his chest.

He looked down. That was the spot where he had been hit by a musket bullet before, and the area was soaked with bright red blood, making it look a bit frightening.

It turned out that Kanao was worried about his condition. Looking at the girl who was still like a marionette, Sam felt a warm current flow through his heart. Warmth.

He reached out, touched the girl's head, and said half-jokingly, "I'm a ghost; this injury is nothing."

He didn't care whether Kanao understood or not; he was just a little happy now. The closed world in Kanao's heart seemed to be opening again. Maybe it wouldn't take long for Kanao to regain the youth and vitality a young girl should have at her age. Because that's what Kanao should be like.
