Genius Wizard Conceals His Origins

Chapter 125

I stared at my right hand for a moment and then opened my eyes wide.

Where is this?

My hand had turned into a kind of inanimate object.

It was useless for caressing a cheek, but instead awakened my hazy mind.

I quickly scanned the room with my eyes, and in less than five seconds, I could determine the name of this place.

The scent of disinfectant touches my nose.

“A hospital, huh.”

That’s a relief.

I closed my eyes and reconstructed my memories.

Explosion.

Injury.

Escape comes to mind sequentially.

Someone must have moved me from the scene of that explosion and flash to the hospital, a place of healing and rest. [Only on Galaxy Translations! / Axiomatic]

It felt like just minutes ago, but judging by the severity of my headache, some time must have passed.

Back then, I could hardly stand on my two legs, let alone go to a hospital. The fact that I’m in a hospital means Werner must have been admitted too, so it’s not an exaggeration to say it’s a relief……

I opened my eyes.

Werner.

What happened to Werner?

“…Mmm.”

Just then, a small, weak voice tickled my ear.

Even with my quite messy mind, I could immediately recognize whose voice it was.

Julia, with her chestnut hair tied tightly, slowly opened her eyes.

Her complexion was pale. Julia, who seemed to have difficulty holding up her neck, nodded her head a few times and finally managed to look at me.

“―Eugene.”

Her eyes widened.

“Eugene. When did you wake up?”

“Just now.”

“…Thank goodness.”

Those lips curved gently. A weak smile.

It seemed to be meant to reassure me, but with so little blood on her face, it was just pitiful.

When I responded with a small smile, Julia finally sighed in relief and got up.

“Stay still, stay still. I’ll call Lena and the doctor right away.”

“Wait a moment, Julia.”

“Yes?”

“Is Werner here too?”

“Yes. In the next room― Eugene.”

Julia, who was about to leave the room leaning on her cane, suddenly turned towards me.

Her expression was urgent.

Is it so surprising that I raised my body from the hospital bed?

Julia roughly discarded her cane, supported my body, and laid me back down on the bed.

A trembling voice returned.

“St-stay still. You shouldn’t move.”

It’s not just her voice.

Julia embraced my shoulders and pressed me down on the bed.

Those deep amber eyes trembled pitifully.

Despite the fact that all I felt was a throbbing headache and numbness from anesthesia, Julia was worried about something. What? [Only on Galaxy Translations! / Axiomatic]

It wasn’t difficult to derive the answer to that.

“Don’t move……”

Julia’s gaze was alternating between my face and my right leg.

“I’ve already explained this to the guardian and family members, but since you’re conscious now, I’ll explain it again, Dr. Eugene Oslo.”

“Yes.”

“The surgery was completed normally.”

The late afternoon sunlight seeping through the hospital room window illuminated the side of the doctor’s face.

Sunlight is usually likened to comfort. However, the expressions of the two people beside the hospital bed, Lena and Julia, were quite solemn, so the doctor’s tone was relatively serious.

“When I say it was completed normally, it means we’ve done the maximum possible treatment from the hospital’s side. Not a complete cure. Compared to the person who was brought in with you, there was almost no damage to your internal organs, but instead, there are many external injuries, probably due to debris. Especially your right hand and right leg. Well……”

“Can’t I use them anymore?”

As a doctor whose profession is healing, it must be even harder to say such words, that is, that one has become disabled.

“Yes. Your right hand.”

“What about my leg?”

My voice echoed in the small hospital room.

The one most agitated by those words was neither me, the person concerned, nor the doctor who had to give the diagnosis.

Julia’s shoulders flinched.

“The shard was deeply embedded, and there was severe nerve damage during the extraction process. Even in your current state, normal walking will be difficult, and if you overexert yourself, it could become completely paralyzed. So, take absolute rest.”

I nodded to show my understanding.

The matters concerning me were over.

It was time to inquire about more important matters.

“Please let me see Werner Ross Diemann’s condition.” [Only on Galaxy Translations! / Axiomatic]

“You’ve been talking about that continuously, but how many times do I have to tell you that your own condition is not trivial? I told you to take absolute rest.”

Still, I persistently requested the doctor to let me go to Werner’s room.

Finally, the doctor who surrendered sighed.

“Guardian. Is he always this stubborn?”

“…Yes.”

“Haah. Alright.”

The doctor then prepared a wheelchair.

“Don’t move even a bit. Understand?”

Only after the doctor’s earnest request was I placed on the wheelchair.

Once, I used to push a wheelchair with my hands; now, I’m riding in one.

It was quite significant, but the situation was not pleasant enough to feel nostalgic about it.

I held my breath as I moved to Werner’s room and…

“……”

I could face Werner, who looked as if he was just sleeping at first glance.

His entire body is intact.

That was all.

Although his arms and legs are fine, his whole body is wrapped in bandages.

“Is he really alright?”

“He’s still unconscious and his internal injuries are severe, but yes. The surgery went well. There’s no danger to his life. He’ll probably be walking around normally in a few months.”

“Though he’ll have a large scar on his face.”

The doctor added, grumbling as he pushed the wheelchair back the way we came.

The doctor’s dissatisfied attitude rather made me feel relieved.

There’s no danger to his life.

That was enough.

The Werner I know would likely rush back to the lab as soon as he recovers, considering the facial scar as something to boast about, to finish the experiment that he hasn’t completed yet.

A slight smile formed on my lips as I briefly imagined everyone at the Nocturne Club trying to stop Werner from heading to the Research Institute.

“Haha……”

Relief.

That short word echoed in my mind. [Only on Galaxy Translations! / Axiomatic]

However, that relief didn’t last long.

“Doctor.”

“Yes?”

Is it that good omens and bad omens always come together?

The color of the sky, darkening unusually quickly, was chillingly cold.

I said:

“How many days has it been since Werner lost consciousness, no. That’s not it.”

“Are you asking what date it is?”

“Yes. That’s it.”

“December, so… Let’s see.”

After a moment’s thought, the doctor answered.

“It’s December 8th. You woke up after about five days, Doctor.”

#December 8th. Slightly cloudy.

“Cold……”

“Lena. You should sleep with a blanket.”

“Mmm……”

The disadvantage of Frauvian hospitals is that most single rooms are cramped, and the advantage is that they provide sleeping space for caregivers.

Julia smiled faintly as she adjusted the blanket over Lena, who was sleeping while curled up.

It was a bit amusing to see her breathing become more comfortable.

“I wonder if this is how it feels to have a younger sister.”

As Julia gently stroked her black hair, her breathing became even quieter.

Even though they were clearly the same age, her movements were really like those of a younger sister, so the smile on her lips deepened even more.

And then.

Tremble―

She stopped smiling as the corners of her mouth quivered.

“……”

In a space about the size of Eugene’s room, there were only two makeshift beds.

Julia, left alone, awake in the empty space, hugged her knees.

She was cold.

She had covered Lena with a blanket because she was more sensitive to the cold than expected, but in truth, she wanted to wrap it around herself. Such a chill was creeping in.

It had been five days since she started staying at the Frauvian hospital.

During that time, Julia had not once been able to sleep peacefully.

Was it because she had to lie down in a cramped room after being used to sleeping in a vast mansion, or because she was scared of being alone in the hospital at night after Lena, who was exhausted, fell asleep early?

It would have been better if it were such a cliché story.

She was afraid. [Only on Galaxy Translations! / Axiomatic]

Julia Müller was afraid. That’s how it should be described.

Squeeze.

She started to tighten her arms around her knees but ended up touching her own legs.

Her pathologically thin legs.

After meeting Eugene, no one thinks of her as someone who can’t walk anymore.

Even the tiny bit of awkwardness that remained in [Walk Assistance] had long disappeared.

However, her legs still don’t have much strength.

Despite her health recovering, the paralysis hasn’t improved.

It can’t be helped, and it’s a body she’s used to now.

But whenever she imagines a happy future, her limp legs always feel resentful. It will surely have a negative impact on childbirth, and when she thinks about children taking after their mother, she becomes even more afraid.

A cripple.

It’s entirely thanks to him that she’s been able to fully accept herself like this.

Because he loves her, she could also be positive about herself.

But.

Eugene got hurt.

Badly.

To the extent that they say he’ll never be able to use his right hand again.

Even his leg has become like that.

It shouldn’t be.

Even if she’s like this, Eugene shouldn’t be.

Isn’t that how it should be?

He’s suffered enough; shouldn’t he be able to enjoy happiness now?

Together with her?

“Ugh.”

Julia rubbed her eyes.

It’s not good.

Doesn’t she already know well that there’s nothing good about repeatedly having bad thoughts alone?

She wiped away the tears that were about to flow silently and pinned the brooch she had placed beside the bed to her chest.

Rather than worrying alone, it seemed better to visit his hospital room.

“He’s a really bad person.”

How did she end up with such a person?

Instead of reassuring her, he always makes her worry.

Still.

It’s because she loves him.

Julia carefully stepped out into the hospital corridor so as not to wake Lena. Since she had to conserve mana, she took slow steps while relying on her cane as much as possible.

Until she heard a sound like a bang―

It was strange.

Because the sound came from the direction of Eugene’s room.

For noise to occur in a hospital room late at night…

Is Eugene still awake? If so, she should sit by his side and talk quietly.

It doesn’t matter if it’s about the past or the future.  [Only on Galaxy Translations! / Axiomatic]

It will surely be comforting for both of them.

Thinking this, when she opened the door to the room…

“…Eugene?”

Julia’s view captured the sight of an empty hospital bed and Eugene Oslo’s figure rolled onto the floor.
