A thick cloud of dust rises.
“Aaaaah!”
“What, what’s with the sudden explosion!”
“Someone call 119! Quick!”
“Ma’am! It’s dangerous here, come this way!”
The ensuing screams and commotion filled the area. From not too far away, a man with sunglasses chuckled softly as he observed the chaos.
“Keheh! Explosions are always fun.”
Behind the sunglasses, blue eyes gleamed. As the wind tousled his light brown hair, he gazed down at the ongoing turmoil.
“He must be dead, right?”
Considering he was the one who caused the explosion, it’s clear he intended for his target to perish. Oddly enough, the man, a Caucasian, licked his lips in disappointment.
“Tch. I heard Silver was quite tough, dying from an explosion like this is just anticlimactic.”
Well, Silver wasn’t renowned for anything. The man shrugged his shoulders and turned away.
“And here. I wonder, why mess with the Chinese, we’re all the same race. Truly, I will never understand Asians.”
He took a cigarette from his pocket and put it between his lips. As he looked at the end of the cigarette.
Poof.
A small explosion ignited the flame. His blue eyes blankly stared at the dancing flame at the tip for a moment. Or, to be precise. The small explosion that lit the cigarette.
“Ah, inside! My dog is inside!”
“When is 119 coming?!”
“Did you actually call them?! Why aren’t they here yet!”
Whoosh.
Amidst the bustling chaos.
“If only the explosion had covered the entire area… What a pity.”
The man, lost in his own regret, took a step when suddenly.
“The entire area? That would have meant permanent expulsion from the organization.”
A voice, clear and resonant, caught his attention. The Caucasian man instantly turned around, flicking something white from his sleeve.
Sssk.
A neatly folded paper airplane. An object completely out of place in the aftermath of an explosion.
“That won’t work a second time.”
Snap.
A handsome man with distinct features snapped his fingers with a frosty expression.
* * *
The explosion that should have occurred was nowhere to be found.
Swish.
Caught in the wind, the paper airplane simply flew weakly away. The man with sunglasses watched the airplane drift away with a blank look then turned his gaze towards Shimun.
“What’s…happening?”
“What do you mean?”
Then.
“How did you survive that explosion! No, even before that.”
The Caucasian man’s eyes sharpened.
“What was that thing you did with your finger just now? Why didn’t my ability activate!”
Even considering the maturity typical of Westerners, he seemed to be just in his early twenties.
Yet, he asked in fluent Korean.
“You sure do have a lot of questions. Why should. I bother explaining that to someone who tried to kill me with an explosion?”
At Shimun’s reply, one of the man’s eyebrows quirked up.
“That’s a fair point.”
He then shook his head, continuing.
“Then, let me ask something else. Do you know me?”
The look in the Caucasian man’s eyes became even more fierce. It was obvious. That Asian man was unmistakably. The assassination target, Kim Shimun.
“You just told me. I would be permanently banned.”
“Oh. You know the phrase ‘permanently banned’? Your Korean is quite good.”
“I was born with a somewhat capable brain.”
“Come on, be honest. It’s not your brainpower, but thanks to your colleague’s abilities, isn’t it?”
“…….”
Looking at the speechless Caucasian man, Shimun was certain.
‘I thought it might be when. I saw those paper dolls……’
The intricately folded paper dolls. And then the ticking of a second hand and the explosion that followed. From his past life experience, there was only one person associated with all these things.
Shimun looked at the Caucasian man in front of him with a faint smile.
“Why so quiet all of a sudden? Did. I hit a nerve? Jayce Clarke.”
“You…….”
The Caucasian man’s face sank even further upon Shimun revealing his name.
Even though it was broad daylight.
His face seemed to be cast under a shadow so dark it almost felt like an illusion.
“How do you know my name? No, that’s the wrong question.”
’Jayce asked with a voice as cold as his expression.
“How much do you know about us?”
“Let’s see. I know if you cause trouble beyond your mission, there’s a heavy punishment from the organization.”
“Is that so? You’re clearly not interested in sharing.”
Jayce smirked bitterly at Shimun’s teasing and spread his arms wide. Suddenly, dozens of paper birds flowed out from between his hands and long coat.
“Well, it doesn’t matter. If you die, that’s the end of it.”
“You’ve got some nerve. But are you sure about this? If you set them off, you really will be ‘permanently banned’.”
Shimun uttered ‘permanently banned’ with a peculiar emphasis. And for good reason; ‘permanently banned’ from that organization meant more than just being expelled.
Did Jayce catch onto what Shimun was implying?
The corners of Jayce’s mouth curled up.
“Don’t worry. If I take care of someone who knows the organization’s identity, I might actually get rewarded.”
“A reward? Ah, the one given by the bomber you so admire, Mogadam bin Abdullah?”
The name of the Arab man. Was it as if mentioning that name touched a nerve?
“You bastard! To speak his name so freely!”
Jayce’s face, previously filled with scorn, contorted like a demon.
Parararak.
Dozens of paper birds flew towards Shimun.
Shimun immediately activated Odin’s Eye.
Kyeeng.
A faint golden magical circle appeared above his left eye.
Then, the movements of the approaching paper birds seemed to slow down.
‘As. I thought, the detonators are all hidden in the center like before.’
More precisely, they were ingeniously concealed by being folded into the paper. Having spotted a unique pattern inside the neatly folded paper birds, Shimun reached out his hand.
Daak.
And then his finger flicked. To the naked eye, nothing appeared to have changed, but through Odin’s Eye, it was clear.
Ssssssk.
The parts of the paper where patterns that looked like detonators were all turned into blank paper. Ultimately, the dozens of paper birds.
Sararak.
Naturally brushed past Shimun, scattering in all directions. At this.
“What, what is this!”
Jayce’s eyes widened in shock.
“Damn yellow monkey! What kind of trick did you pull off!”
He had no choice but to react this way.
Jayce Clarke’s Class A ability, Paper Explosion, had never failed even once before.
A prime example. Despite the target assassin possessing water-related abilities and having soaked all the paper in water,
the normal explosion obliterated his body without a trace!
“I’m not obligated to explain. Let’s just say it was a mismatch.”
“Stop spouting nonsense! There’s only one person in this world who could talk about compatibility with me!”
Jayce, his coat fluttering once more, let out an angry shout.
Was he using some sort of artifact?
Jayce’s body was floating in mid-air.
Thanks to that.
Swissh, swissh!
Various shapes of paper dolls poured out from Jayce’s possession.
Tick, tick.
Accompanied by the ticking sound akin to rain, they poured out like a torrential downpour.
‘Looks like he’s pouring out everything he’s got.’
Each paper doll boasted a power greater than a grenade, yet, there were hundreds being released. However, Kim Shimun simply observed calmly with his eyes.
It was expected. No matter how renowned the emerging talents of the villainous organization known as Desperado were, in front of an alchemist like Kim Shimun, they were merely paper dolls.
“This can’t be…”
The paper dolls scattered helplessly around Kim Shimun just like the previous attacks. Jayce looked down at them with a stunned expression. Kim Shimun, with his golden-flecked eyes, glanced at Jayce and smiled faintly.
“Easy.”
He was serious. Jayce Clarke, a promising talent of Desperado, though he’d never admit it, transforming matter into a desired form is one of the basics of alchemy.
As long as equivalent exchange is satisfied, any alchemist can do it. In the end,
“Don’t mock me! I said don’t laugh!”
Rustle, rustle.
Given the nature of paper bombs to explode due to the catalyst etched into the paper, Kim Shimun, who could ‘reconstitute the part with the catalyst back into plain paper,’ was indeed the worst matchup.
Furthermore, “See, it’s useless.”
Snap.
With no need for any prior preparation, let alone a concoction circle, merely flicking his finger was enough to end all reconstitution.
“Ahhh!”
Had he used up all the paper dolls he possessed?
“Now you see? You stand no chance against me.”
“…Fine, I’ll admit it. I don’t know what trick you’re using, but my abilities are of no use against you.”
Jayce could no longer disperse paper dolls, biting his lip in frustration. Even his mentor, the infamous villain bomber Mogadam bin Abdullah, had never neutralized his explosions in such a manner.
‘To be rendered so powerless by just some guy from Asia…!’
Grinding his teeth in frustration might have caused it, a bitter taste of blood and sharp pain invaded Jayce’s mouth.
“Ha… I thought I’d have to face at least a diamond-ranked to use it.”
Jayce laughed in resignation and threw off his coat. Well, more precisely,
Flutter.
The coat seemed to fold up like origami. Was it enchanted in some special way? The coat quickly transformed into the shape of a paper airplane.
“Desperado never fails its mission!”
Jayce, standing on the coat, immediately flew towards Kim Shimun. Kim Shimun, in response, once again raised his hand in front.
But,
‘That is…’
Jayce’s shirt. Shimun’s left eye twitched at the sight of the rune engraved on the left side of Jayce’s chest.
‘Magic Immune?’
Immune.
A form of absolute immunity that completely negates certain attacks or abnormal statuses. Among them, the one focused on magic was engraved on the left side of Jayce’s shirt.
‘With that level of magical power, it’s at least B-Grade… Tsk, he’s wearing something damn expensive.’
Shimun’s gaze naturally shifted to the right side of Jayce’s shirt. There, the trigger for the A-grade characteristic, paper explosion, that had been engraved on the paper dolls before, was inscribed.
‘So, he intends to self-destruct?’
Desperado, the world’s leading villain organization. True to the notorious reputation of such a place, their equipment, as well as their mental armament, were exceptional. Noticing Shimun’s eyes harden slightly, Jayce understood.
“Kuhaha! Did you notice? But it’s too late!”
Jayce accelerated, bursting into maniacal laughter.
Squeak!
The trigger symbol on the right side of his shirt heated up, seeming about to explode at any moment.
“Kihi! Let’s go to hell together, damn monkey!”
The moment he flew toward Shimun, engulfed in his coat.
“Sorry, but you go alone.”
Snap.
With a flick of his fingers, Shimun’s muscles in both arms and legs visibly bulged. Following that,
Heavenly Demon Divine Art.
Supreme Emperor’s Demolition Strike.
Demonic energy erupted from Shimun’s fiercely thrust fist.
Kwoooooom!
Jayce, who had been flying in, was wrapped up and disintegrated in a massive explosion.
* * *
Rumble!
Like the sudden explosion before.
“What, what now?! Another explosion?”
“Is it terrorism? What are the police doing?!”
“The police? This clearly looks like a case for the Awakening Crimes Unit!”
Another explosion plunged the Sillim area into chaos.
“Huh…”
The perpetrator of the second explosion, Shimun, took a deep breath, relaxing his shoulders.
“That was a close call.”
Not far from him, one of Jayce’s legs fell to the ground. Shaking his head slightly at the sight, Shimun mused,
“To think he’d attempt self-destruction.”
The Supreme Emperor’s Demolition Strike, a technique of the Heavenly Demon Technique.
If it weren’t for this peerless martial art combined with the [Ogre’s Physique], he might have ended up in the same state.
“Real lunatics.”
-Exactly! But are you okay, oppa?
“Yeah. Apart from using up all my strength, there’s nothing wrong.”
Shimun said, patting his shoulder where he had utilized the Emperor’s Demise, as the Philosopher’s Stone spoke with a worried voice.
-You could have just avoided the self-destruction. Then you wouldn’t have had to suffer like this.
“That’s true but…”
Shimun trailed off.
His gaze turned downward.
Hearing the voices of the people below, the Philosopher’s Stone replied in a somewhat deflated voice.
-Well, that’s our brother for you. Sorry, forget what. I just said.
“There’s nothing for you to be sorry about. You weren’t wrong.”
Despite the intense battle,
A smile naturally flowed in response to the Philosopher’s Stone’s concern.
-By the way, brother, what are you going to do now? I heard there were reports to the authorities?
“Ah, I heard too.”
Indeed, the sound of sirens was coming from not too far away.
‘Police cars, fire trucks, and the Awakening Crimes Unit, I guess.’
Having spotted the siren vehicles, Shimun, donning his hood deeply, infused himself with the [Black Panther’s Physique].
Then, kicking off from the rooftop, he brought his phone to his ear.
“Hey, Kim Shihyuk, it’s me. Are you busy right now?”
