Chapter 1 - I'm not a murderer
In Wei Mansion, the people kneeling on the ground in the courtyard were crying miserably.
Half an hour ago, she was still dealing with a murder case in a modern street, but, unexpectedly, the murderer took out a self-made detonator from his arms, and with a bang, the flame enveloped her.
Opening her eyes again, she found herself wearing an ancient costume, kneeling among a group of maidservants. Hearing the steward say angrily, the master was poisoned to death, and everyone in the kitchen is suspected.
In the hall, apart from the old lady of the Wei family who was in charge, there was also a row of people in official uniforms. Just now Bai Yue heard from the steward that the owner of the mansion, Mr. Wei, was a sixth-rank doctor of imperial studies, and he was poisoned to death in the mansion. This is a major event.
“Sir,” the steward respectfully said, “Today, all the people from the kitchen are here, a total of nine. Only a few of them had the opportunity to poison Master’s wine. I inquired, and the wine was taken from the kitchen and delivered directly to the Master’s room. Xiao Cui delivered it.”
Beside Bai Yue, a girl’s face turned pale. She suddenly knelt and kowtowed, saying, “Sir, even though I served the wine, everyone in the kitchen had the opportunity to come into contact with it…”
Xiao Cui paused, then suddenly pointed at Bai Yue and exclaimed, “It must be her!”
Bai Yue was stunned.
Immediately, everyone’s gaze fell on Bai Yue.
In order to clear her own name, Xiaocui disregarded everything and blurted out, “We have all been in the mansion for a long time. Only she arrived yesterday, not saying anything, claiming to have wandered into the capital city without confirming its truth. There must be something wrong. Right after she arrived, the Master had an incident. How could it be so coincidental?”
As she spoke, the looks people gave her became suspicious.
Bai Yue was also on the verge of collapse. Within half an hour, she still hadn’t figured out who she was, yet she was already being labeled a murderer.
“I am Lieutenant Zhou Chen,” the man’s voice sounded deep. “Minister Wei is an appointed official of the court, and his murder is a serious matter. If you are the culprit, it’s better to confess now to avoid further suffering.”
“I didn’t do it, she’s talking nonsense,” Bai Yue blurted out.
The young girls in the kitchen, one by one, caught the man’s gaze. The suppressed crying sounds grew louder, creating a chaotic scene.
“Everyone shut up!” Zhou Chen’s patience was wearing thin. “Since someone dared to poison, it seems they have a lot of courage. They won’t admit it without some pressure. Take them all away.”
The servants responded and immediately began to pull the people away.
No one had been to the jail of the Lieutenant’s Residence, but clearly, innocent or not, going there would result in some kind of punishment.
Bai Yue had already been grabbed by the arm and pulled up. She felt a sense of urgency. This was the first crime scene, and the person had just died. All the clues should still be present. However, if she was taken away to the jail, she wouldn’t even be able to explain her own name and background, then she would be in real trouble.
The person pulling her had tremendous strength, and Bai Yue felt like her arm was about to break. At this moment, a gust of wind blew, lifting the white cloth covering Minister Wei’s body slightly.
Bai Yue immediately looked over and suddenly had a flash of insight in her mind. She exclaimed loudly, “Master was not poisoned to death!”
The gaze of everyone instantly focused on her, and Zhou Chen turned abruptly. “What did you say?”
“Master may not have died from poisoning,” Bai Yue bravely looked at Zhou Chen.
Zhou Chen walked over, and the crowd immediately parted.
He looked at Bai Yue with a heavy gaze. “Why do you say that? What do you know?”
“I don’t know anything, but I saw Master Wei,” Bai Yue didn’t have time to consider much at this point. She shook off the grip of the servant and rushed forward, wanting to lift the white cloth.
“Bold.” Someone immediately shouted, and Zhou Chen didn’t move, but he stood in front of Bai Yue. His steel-like hand firmly held her wrist.
After a moment of silence, the Wei Residence finally had some reactions. The old lady of the Wei family yelled, “Capture her quickly, what does that girl want to do…”
As she spoke, the servants of the Wei Residence rushed over, but Zhou Chen waved his hand.
The person rushing up hesitated and stopped.
Zhao Chen’s face was stern. “Every word you say now must be true. Otherwise, you won’t be able to afford the consequences.”
Bai Yue nodded.
“You say that Lord Wei didn’t die from poisoning. What evidence do you have?”
Bai Yue took a deep breath, one hand still held by Zhao Chen, and with the other, she directly lifted the white cloth.
With a clatter, most of the people in the courtyard exclaimed.
Lord Wei, about fifty years old, was strong and robust. At this moment, his eyes were wide open as he lay on the ground, dead.
The deceased was important, even more so as a government official. Logically, someone of Bai Yue’s status shouldn’t casually desecrate, but since the cloth had already been lifted, no one could stop her from taking a glance.
“Speak,” Zhao Chen’s expression was icy, his grip on Bai Yue’s wrist tightening. “What did you see?”
He’s quite strong, Bai Yue winced in pain, then pointed to the ground. “I saw him.”
Zhao Chen was somewhat surprised. “Did you see the murderer?”
“No, I didn’t see the murderer.” Bai Yue knew this person had misunderstood and quickly explained, “The wind blew the cloth just now, and I saw Lord Wei’s face. His face was blue-purple, and his eyes were bulging. These are typical signs of death by suffocation, not poisoning.”
“You understand this too?” Zhao Chen was a bit surprised, but then sneered, “Do you think I can’t differentiate between death by poisoning and death by suffocation?”
It made sense; death by suffocation is a very distinct sign. As a lieutenant in charge of the city’s security, he had seen countless deaths of various kinds and wouldn’t make such a shallow mistake.
Zhao Chen waved his hand, indicating to take her away.
“Wait a moment.” Bai Yue hurriedly said, “Lord Wei clearly showed signs of death by suffocation. Why are you so insistent that it’s poisoning?”
It seemed like this wasn’t a secret. A follower by Zhao Chen’s side spoke, “When Lord Wei was found, he was holding a wine cup in his hand, and there was froth at the corner of his mouth. There were traces of blood around his mouth and nose. We immediately tested the wine in his cup, it was poisoned, and we used a silver needle to probe his throat, also poisoned.”
Indeed, these were very typical symptoms of poisoning. Bai Yue was stunned, feeling that something wasn’t quite right.
“It seems you do have a problem,” Zhao Chen’s face darkened. “Tie her up and take her away.”
His subordinates immediately approached. Without waiting for Bai Yue to struggle, they quickly and firmly bound her hands together in just a few moments, dragging her out as if handling a piglet.
Suddenly, it seemed like someone was approaching outside the courtyard, and the sound of footsteps reached them.
Bai Yue was dragged a few stumbling steps, her feet tripping over something, causing her to lurch forward.
Just as she was about to hit the ground, a hand caught her arm.
“Sir Jian,” Zhao Chen walked over from behind, “You’re here too?”
Bai Yue looked up in astonishment and saw that the person supporting her was a young man dressed in black.
Looking at him from bottom to top, she couldn’t help but find him strikingly impressive. He was remarkably handsome – with thick eyebrows, starry eyes, a high nose bridge, slightly pursed lips, and an overall outstanding appearance.
Even the young man’s hand was handsome – long and slender fingers that seemed delicate but had a strong grip as he lifted her up, holding her steadily.
“Sir Zhou,” the man nodded, but didn’t say more. Instead, he looked at Bai Yue and whispered, “Are you okay? Are you injured?”
Bai Yue shook her head, dazed and bewildered.
“That’s good then,” the man pulled Bai Yue back very naturally, positioning her behind himself. One of his subordinates who followed him quickly moved to untie the coarse rope binding her wrists.
“Sir Jian, what do you mean by this?” Zhao Chen, who had approached, was clearly displeased but also seemed wary, suppressing his discontent.
The young man took a couple of steps forward and loudly announced to everyone, “I am Jian Yu, the Chief of the Grand Court. The case of Minister Wei’s murder will now be taken over by the Grand Court.”
Then, Jian Yu turned and said, “Sir Zhou, you’ve worked hard. I will handle the matters from here.”
Upon hearing this, some discontent was evident among Zhou Chen’s subordinates. Someone muttered, clearly indicating that such a straightforward case was being handed over to the Grand Court, seemingly stealing credit.
However, Zhou Chen immediately shot his subordinates a stern look and readily agreed, “Alright, I’ll leave the rest to Chief Jian.”
As the rope on Bai Yue’s wrists was untied, she was adjusting her wrists when Zhou Chen suddenly stopped while passing by her, pointing at her.
“This woman,” Zhou Chen said, “has an unclear background and is highly likely to be the culprit. Investigate her thoroughly, Chief.”
“It’s not possible,” Jian Yu responded, “Someone is vouching for her, and she cannot be the culprit.”
Zhou Chen was puzzled, asking, “Who is vouching for her?”
Jian Yu smiled faintly, “Me.”
