The Apokolips Ship 01 loomed in the dark void of space, its jagged, malevolent design exuding dread. Inside, alarms blared as swarms of Parademons descended upon the lone intruder who dared to assault the heart of Darkseid's might.
Merlin stood at the center of the chaos, an ethereal figure draped in robes of white and purple, his staff shimmering with radiant energy. With a flick of his hand, golden light erupted, dissolving the incoming Parademons into ash.
"Your welcome is as cold as I expected," Merlin mused, his voice lilting with amusement. "But I must commend the effort. Still, this is hardly a challenge for one such as I."
With a graceful twirl of his staff, he conjured a wave of sparkling illusions. The Parademons screeched as copies of Merlin appeared around them, each one weaving dazzling spells that detonated with precision. The room lit up like a battlefield of starlight as the horde was systematically obliterated.
The ship trembled as the last Parademon fell. Merlin strode forward, his staff tapping rhythmically against the metal floor. Ahead lay the throne room, where he sensed the oppressive presence of Desaad, Darkseid's sycophantic torturer.
"Desaad," Merlin called as the doors slid open, revealing the schemer sitting on an ornate, jagged throne. "You might want to rethink the décor. It's rather... dreary. But I didn't come to discuss interior design. I've come to end your mischief."
Desaad's gaunt figure rose from the throne, his face a mask of twisted glee. "You overestimate yourself, magician. A fool wandering into the lion's den."
"Fool? Hardly," Merlin retorted, his staff glowing. "I am a seeker of wonders, a guardian of Avalon, The Minister of Gaia and now, your worst nightmare."
Desaad snarled and thrust his hand forward. Energy tendrils surged toward Merlin, crackling with malicious intent. Merlin spun his staff, forming a shimmering barrier of light that deflected the attack effortlessly.
"Predictable," Merlin said, darting forward with surprising speed. His staff transformed into a blade—the golden replica of Excalibur itself. With a single swipe, he severed the energy tendrils and leaped toward Desaad.
Desaad stumbled back, his usual arrogance faltering as Merlin closed in. The illusionist's strikes were precise and relentless, forcing Desaad to retreat behind hastily conjured barriers.
"You're out of your league," Merlin taunted, his voice carrying an edge.
Desaad growled, summoning more energy to strike at Merlin. Yet, the illusions Merlin wove around him created a kaleidoscope of confusion. Every time Desaad struck, his attacks passed harmlessly through shimmering duplicates.
"Enough!" Desaad screamed, slamming his fist on a hidden console.
A deafening roar echoed through the chamber as the massive form of Kalibak, Darkseid's brutish son, entered the room. His hulking frame was covered in armor, and his Beta-Club crackled with raw destructive power.
"You called, worm?" Kalibak growled, glaring at Desaad. Then his eyes fell on Merlin, narrowing in delight. "Ah, fresh meat. A scrawny magician? This won't take long."
Merlin raised an eyebrow. "Ah, Kalibak. The temperamental brute. Let's see if brawn can keep up with brilliance."
Kalibak didn't wait for another word. With a feral roar, he charged, swinging his Beta-Club with enough force to crack the floor. Merlin sidestepped gracefully, retaliating with a slash of his golden sword. Sparks flew as the blade met Kalibak's armor.
"You'll have to do better than that," Kalibak sneered, bringing his weapon down in a crushing arc. Merlin vanished in a swirl of mist, reappearing behind him.
"Better? Very well," Merlin said, thrusting his sword forward. The blade struck true, piercing a gap in Kalibak's armor and drawing blood.
Kalibak roared in fury, lashing out wildly. Merlin danced around him, his movements fluid and otherworldly. Desaad, meanwhile, hung back, watching with calculating eyes.
Despite Merlin's skill, Kalibak's sheer strength began to turn the tide. Each swing of the Beta-Club grew faster and more precise, forcing Merlin onto the defensive. A devastating strike shattered Merlin's staff, sending him sprawling across the room.
"You're done!" Kalibak declared, raising his club for the finishing blow.
Merlin's eyes glimmered with defiance as he said "Am I?" he then slammed his staff into the ground as a purple magical seal erupted as he chanted
"From the stars of the inner sea and the tower of insight...
From the four corners of paradise, let them know:
Their story is filled with blessings.
Only those free of sin may pass...
Garden of Avalon!"
The air around them shimmered, and the room dissolved into golden light. In an instant, they were no longer aboard the Apokolips ship but in a realm of ethereal beauty—a place where the sky was painted in hues of gold and violet, and lush fields stretched endlessly.
"Welcome to Avalon," Merlin said, rising to his feet. The injuries he'd sustained began to fade as the magic of the land empowered him. "Here, the balance shifts. Your darkness weakens, and my strength returns."
Kalibak and Desaad staggered, visibly affected by the realm's purity.
As the golden fields of Avalon shimmered in ethereal splendor, Merlin turned his gaze to Kalibak and Desaad. The brute and the schemer stood side by side, their discomfort in the pure realm evident, yet their resolve unbroken.
Kalibak sneered, brandishing his Beta-Club. "You think this pretty paradise will save you, mage? It won't. You're still a weakling."
Merlin chuckled softly, twirling the fractured remains of his staff. "Oh, I agree. Avalon doesn't make me invincible. It's a land of purity, and I..." He paused, his eyes gleaming with mischief. "I am no saint. My sins tether me to the mortal world. My power here is limited."
Desaad's calculating eyes narrowed. "Then why bring us here, magician? What's your game?"
Merlin's smirk widened. He raised his hand, and a golden glyph formed in the air. "What if I wasn't the one meant to fight you?"
Kalibak tensed as a radiant pillar of light burst forth, the brilliance blinding. From within the radiance, a figure emerged—a man garbed in shimmering gold and white, with a crown of light upon his head. His very presence radiated hope and justice.
Merlin stepped back, his voice filled with theatrical flair. "Come forth, Solis... or should I say, my Hero Lightray!"
Lightray, loyal servant of the Highfather and sworn enemy of Darkseid, floated above the field, his light casting shadows upon the dark figures of Kalibak and Desaad. His gaze burned with fury.
"Darkseid's spawn," Lightray declared, his voice reverberating with righteous anger. "Your evil has plagued the cosmos long enough. Here, in Avalon, your darkness has no place. I will cleanse it."
Kalibak roared in defiance, raising his Beta-Club. "Cleanse this!" He charged, swinging the weapon with tremendous force.
Lightray moved with the speed of light itself, evading the attack effortlessly. He retaliated with a searing beam of energy from his hands, striking Kalibak square in the chest. The New God staggered, smoke rising from his armor.
Kalibak roared, his Beta-Club crackling with energy as he charged. The force of his sprint shook the ground of Avalon, the brute's rage palpable.
"You're nothing but a shining pest!" Kalibak bellowed, swinging his Beta-Club in a wide arc.
Lightray darted forward, leaving a golden streak of light in his wake. The Beta-Club missed its mark, smashing into the ground and sending chunks of Avalon's pristine terrain flying.
"You mistake light for weakness," Lightray retorted, weaving through Kalibak's wild swings. "But light burns, Kalibak. It blinds."
Lightray unleashed a concentrated beam of energy that struck Kalibak square in the chest, sending the brute staggering backward. Smoke rose from Kalibak's armor, but he growled, unfazed.
With a sudden lunge, Kalibak caught Lightray off guard, his massive hand grabbing the hero mid-flight.
"Let's see you shine under pressure!" Kalibak sneered, slamming Lightray into the ground with immense force.
The impact left a crater, cracks spidering out across Avalon's glowing surface. Lightray groaned as Kalibak raised his Beta-Club high.
"You're strong," Lightray admitted, his voice strained, "but not smart."
Golden energy exploded from Lightray's body, forcing Kalibak to release him. The burst sent the New God staggering, his arm burned from the intensity.
Kalibak snarled, his fury redoubling. "Enough of this light show!"
He activated the Beta-Club's full power, channeling destructive waves of energy. With a devastating sweep, the weapon unleashed a shockwave that struck Lightray mid-air, hurling him into one of Avalon's crystalline trees. The tree shattered on impact, and Lightray fell to the ground, coughing as blood trickled from the corner of his mouth.
"You bleed like the rest, 'hero,'" Kalibak sneered, stomping toward him.
Lightray struggled to his feet, wiping the blood away. "Even the brightest stars endure darkness before they shine again."
Kalibak didn't wait for another taunt. He charged, swinging his Beta-Club with earth-shattering force. Lightray barely managed to dodge, the club grazing his shoulder and sending a sharp jolt of pain through his body.
Kalibak pressed his advantage, pummeling the ground with relentless strikes. Lightray's movements grew more desperate, each dodge taking a toll.
Finally, Kalibak landed a direct hit, the Beta-Club slamming into Lightray's side. The hero cried out as he was sent hurtling across the battlefield, crashing into a golden hillside. in utter pain
Kalibak laughed, triumphant. "Where's your light now, Lightray? Broken? Dimmed?"
Lightray's body trembled as he pushed himself up. His armor was cracked, his radiant aura flickering like a dying ember. But his eyes burned with defiance.
"My light isn't just for me," he said, his voice firm despite his injuries. "It's for every soul you've crushed under your heel. For every world your father has ravaged. And here, in Avalon, it will burn brighter than ever."
Kalibak roared and charged, his Beta-Club raised for a killing blow.
But Lightray didn't move. He stood tall, his hands glowing with golden energy.
As Kalibak closed in, Lightray unleashed a brilliant nova of light. The explosion was blinding, engulfing Kalibak entirely. The brute screamed as the searing light pierced his armor, his Beta-Club disintegrating in his grasp.
Lightray surged forward, his form blazing like a star. With a roar, he drove a concentrated beam of light straight into Kalibak's chest. The beam pierced through the New God, leaving a gaping, glowing wound.
Kalibak staggered, his massive frame collapsing to his knees.
"This... this can't be..." Kalibak gasped, his voice weak.
Lightray hovered above him, his golden aura shining brighter than ever. "Evil always underestimates the power of hope.....This is for you HighFather"
With a final burst of energy, Lightray unleashed a devastating surge of light, disintegrating Kalibak into ash Ending him, Instantly
While it wasn't the Dream Revenged he hoped it would be, At least he took something from Darkseid, The Lonely Knight of New Genesis, Promoted to a Hero
