Chapter 20: Chapter 20: A New Contender
The city felt alive in the worst possible way. Jiho and Haeun couldn't walk a block without sensing the ripples of danger. The Silver Fang's presence had grown more prominent; their operatives were crawling through the streets like a plague, searching, waiting, hunting.
The shard they carried was a beacon—a cursed thing that called death upon its bearer. Jiho knew this, but he couldn't bring himself to abandon it. Whatever this fragment of the Keystone was, it was critical to understanding the Nexus and stopping Taejin.
A Mysterious Invitation
Late that evening, as Jiho and Haeun regrouped in their safehouse, a knock echoed at the door. It wasn't the timid knock of a beggar or the forceful pounding of a Silver Fang enforcer. It was calm. Calculated.
Jiho exchanged a glance with Haeun, who shrugged and tightened her grip on her blade. Jiho's shadows crept to the door before he cautiously opened it.
Standing on the threshold was a man in his late forties, tall and well-built, with neatly combed gray hair and a pristine black suit. His presence radiated power, though it wasn't physical; it was in the way he stood, in the unwavering confidence in his dark eyes.
"Are you Kang Jiho?" the man asked, his voice smooth and even.
Jiho didn't respond, his shadows shifting restlessly around him.
The man smiled faintly. "I'll take that as a yes. My name is Min Seongjae. I represent the Crimson Pact."
Jiho's gaze narrowed. "Never heard of it."
"You wouldn't have," Seongjae replied, stepping into the room uninvited. Haeun tensed but held her ground. "We prefer to operate in the shadows, much like yourself. However, recent events have forced us into the open."
"And what do you want?" Jiho asked coldly, his shadows poised to strike.
"The shard," Seongjae said simply. "You're carrying a fragment of the Keystone, and that makes you both a target and an asset. The Silver Fang is only one of many forces hunting it. If you continue down this path alone, you won't survive."
Jiho smirked. "Let me guess. You're offering protection?"
"Protection, allies, information," Seongjae said, his tone unwavering. "The Crimson Pact has resources you can only dream of. But it comes at a cost."
"And what's that?" Haeun asked, stepping forward. Her voice was sharp, distrust evident in her eyes.
Seongjae turned to her, his smile widening. "Loyalty. Once you join the Pact, there's no turning back."
Jiho considered the offer, his mind racing. The Crimson Pact could be a valuable ally—or a dangerous leash. But their appearance couldn't be a coincidence. How much did they know about him? About the Nexus? About Taejin?
"I'll think about it," Jiho said finally, his voice icy.
Seongjae inclined his head. "Fair enough. But don't take too long. Time is a luxury neither of us can afford."
Trust in the Shadows
As soon as Seongjae left, Haeun turned to Jiho, her expression serious. "We can't trust him."
"I know," Jiho replied, staring at the shard on the table. Its faint glow seemed to pulse in time with his thoughts. "But we can't ignore him either."
Haeun frowned. "You're not seriously considering joining them, are you?"
Jiho didn't answer immediately. Instead, he picked up the shard, ignoring the sting it left on his fingertips. "If the Crimson Pact knows about this, then so do others. We need to stay ahead of them, no matter the cost."
Haeun crossed her arms. "You're playing a dangerous game."
Jiho smirked faintly, his confidence unshaken. "What else is new?"
The Gathering Storm
Over the next few days, Jiho and Haeun worked tirelessly to piece together what they could about the Keystone. The Black Thorn provided what intel they had, but it was limited. Taejin's operations were shrouded in secrecy, and even the Silver Fang operatives they captured refused to talk.
But Jiho wasn't idle. The shadows were his eyes and ears, and through them, he uncovered whispers of a grand gathering—a meeting of guilds, factions, and rogue elements, all converging on one location.
"It's a Nexus site," Jiho said, pointing to a map spread across the table. "A dormant one, but if Taejin has his way, it won't stay that way for long."
Haeun leaned over the map, her brow furrowed. "You think he's planning to activate it?"
"More than that," Jiho replied. "He's planning to weaponize it."
The implications were chilling. Activating a Nexus site could unleash untold chaos, flooding the surrounding area with monsters and destabilizing the region. If Taejin succeeded, it would be catastrophic.
"We need to stop him," Haeun said firmly. "But we can't do it alone."
Jiho nodded. "Then it's time to call in the Black Thorn. If Taejin wants a war, we'll give him one."
A Message Sent
Jiho stood on the rooftop of the safehouse, the city stretching out before him. The shard rested in his palm, its glow casting eerie patterns on his face.
"This is just the beginning," he murmured to himself. "If Taejin thinks he can control the Nexus, he's in for a surprise."
He closed his hand around the shard, its light vanishing into his shadows. Turning back to the safehouse, he spoke aloud.
"Haeun. Get Dojin. We move tonight."
The fight wasn't over—it was only just beginning.
