Chapter 4: 04 - Marked by Darkness
The ride back to the base was suffocating. No one spoke, the weight of the earlier battle hanging in the air like a storm cloud. Noah sat in a corner of the truck, his knees drawn up as he stared blankly at the floor. The words of the voice still echoed in his mind.
Descendant of Lucifer.
What did it mean? Was it a mistake? A cruel joke from the universe?
"Hey."
Noah looked up to see Julia, her usually warm expression replaced by one of concern. She crouched in front of him, her voice low so the others wouldn't hear.
"What happened back there?" she asked.
"I don't know," he admitted, his voice hoarse. "It just… happened."
Julia studied him for a moment before nodding. "Whatever it was, it saved us. Don't let the others get to you."
Her words were meant to reassure him, but the glances from Max and the others told a different story. Suspicion, fear, and resentment brewed in their eyes.
When they arrived at the base, Marcus wasted no time. He barked orders for everyone to disperse, then motioned for Noah to follow him.
The two of them walked in silence down a series of cold, metallic corridors, the hum of machinery filling the air. Finally, they stopped in front of a reinforced door. Marcus punched in a code, and the door slid open with a hiss.
"Inside," Marcus said, his tone leaving no room for argument.
Noah stepped into the dimly lit room. The walls were lined with monitors displaying various maps, data, and video feeds. In the center of the room stood a woman with short silver hair and sharp, intelligent eyes.
"Noah, this is Dr. Evelyn Hart," Marcus said, shutting the door behind him. "She's going to ask you some questions."
Dr. Hart approached, her gaze piercing. "Noah, sit."
He obeyed, taking a seat in the cold metal chair in the center of the room. Evelyn circled him like a predator assessing its prey.
"Tell me what happened during the battle," she said, her voice calm but firm.
Noah hesitated, unsure of where to start. "I… don't really know. I was fighting the Titan, and then… something awakened inside me. A voice. It called me the descendant of Lucifer."
Evelyn's eyebrows raised slightly, but she didn't interrupt.
"There was this power," he continued. "It felt… overwhelming, like it wasn't mine. I don't even know how I controlled it."
Evelyn exchanged a glance with Marcus, who stood silently by the door.
"This is unprecedented," Evelyn murmured, more to herself than to anyone else. "Your powers don't align with the typical abilities we've observed. They're something else entirely."
"Something dangerous," Marcus added, his arms crossed.
Noah's fists clenched. "I didn't ask for this."
"None of us did," Marcus shot back. "But now you're a liability until we understand what's going on."
Evelyn held up a hand to silence him. "Noah, I'll be running some tests to analyze your abilities. Until then, you'll be restricted to the base. Do you understand?"
He nodded reluctantly. "I just want answers."
"So do we," Evelyn said, her tone softer this time. "We'll figure this out."
That night, Noah lay in his bunk, staring at the ceiling. The room was dark, but his mind was alive with questions.
Who was he? What was this power inside him? And why did it feel so… familiar?
As he drifted into an uneasy sleep, the voice returned, whispering in his mind.
"This is only the beginning. The truth will set you free… or destroy you."
