Chapter 22: Chapter 22
Kai froze, his eyes widening as Steve George and the taskforce stormed into the warehouse. The sight of their weapons raised and ready sent a jolt through him.
"No, wait!"
Kai shouted, throwing up his hands.
"Don't shoot!"
But it was too late. The officers opened fire, their aim precise, cutting down the remaining men before Kai could stop them. The echoes of gunfire rang in his ears, and when the smoke cleared, the warehouse was silent except for the heavy breathing of the officers.
Immediately Kai turned to Steve, anger flashing in his eyes.
"Why the hell did you do that?"
he demanded, his voice sharp.
"I could've gotten information out of them!"
Steve lowered his weapon, his expression calm but firm.
"We didn't have a choice. When the prison guard reported you'd been kidnapped, we moved fast. I wasn't going to risk finding you dead."
Kai's jaw tightened, frustration boiling under his skin.
"You didn't have to kill them. Now we've got nothing—no leads, no names, no answers."
However Steve sighed, his shoulders relaxing slightly as he holstered his gun. "I'm sorry, Kai. You're right. But we couldn't take any chances."
Kai shook his head, his fists clenched. "What's done is done," he muttered, his voice bitter. "But I didn't even get a single piece of information. Not one."
Steve placed a hand on his shoulder, his tone softer now. "You were never supposed to be in this position, Kai. The truth is, you're innocent our investigation confirmed everything."
Kai looked at him skeptically. "Innocent? Then how the hell did I end up here? How did they manage to kidnap me from prison?"
However Steve hesitated for a moment, then sighed again.
"The prison guard in charge of you—he's one of those people who can't stand the idea of anyone taking the law into their own hands. He felt like the system had been undermined, so he arranged for this to happen."
At that moment Kai's eyes narrowed, the pieces falling into place. "So he thought he'd teach me a lesson?" he said bitterly. "By having me kidnapped?"
Steve nodded grimly. "Something like that. It's over now, though. We'll deal with him. You're free, Kai."
Kai looked around at the carnage, his frustration still simmering but tempered by a hollow sense of relief. For now, at least, but he knows something was still wrong, the questions they asked him was different from what Steve is saying.
But he decided to remain calm.
'Soon their time would come.'
He thought to himself.
Steve chuckled as he holstered his weapon, a rare moment of levity breaking through the tension. "You know, Kai," he said, shaking his head, "you just took the law into your own hands without even realizing it."
Kai couldn't help but laugh, a dry, humorless sound.
"Guess that makes me no better than the people you were just lecturing me about," he replied, shaking his head in disbelief.
Steve grinned and gave Kai a firm pat on the shoulder. "Take care of yourself, Kai. I was planning to release you tomorrow anyway, but hey—looks like you're free now."
Kai smirked faintly, watching as Steve turned and walked toward the exit with his usual confident stride. "Always one step ahead," Steve added over his shoulder, his voice light but with a trace of authority.
As the warehouse emptied and the last of the officers cleared the scene, Kai stood in the silence, taking in the wreckage. His eyes roamed the premises, catching on a small camera mounted in the corner of the ceiling. He squinted at it, his mind racing.
"Why is there a camera here?"
he thought, his body stiffening. The idea of coincidence gnawed at him. He replayed the events in his head—the timing, the flawless precision of the takedown, Steve's sudden arrival just as he had broken free.
His stomach twisted.
"Why would I believe this is all a coincidence?"
Kai's gaze darkened as a thought struck him like lightning. Could Steve George have planned this from the start? Have I been blind to who he really is because I admired him too much to see it?
Kai's eyebrows furrowed, his mind racing as pieces of the puzzle began to align.
"Why am I doubting? I don't need to ask questions. I have the all-seeing power. A handshake is all it takes."
Without wasting a second, Kai sprinted toward the exit, his boots pounding against the cold concrete floor. He spotted Steve just as he was stepping outside, his figure framed against the moonlight.
"Steve!" Kai called out, his voice steady but loud enough to make the man pause.
Steve turned, his expression curious. "What is it, Kai? Something on your mind?"
Kai slowed his pace, adjusting his stance to appear casual. He extended his hand, a faint smile tugging at his lips. "You know," he began, his tone light, "I've always thought about shaking hands with the great Steve George. Never had the chance until now."
immediately Steve's eyes flickered with amusement. He chuckled, stepping closer. "Is that so?" he said, his tone friendly. "Well, I can't deny a fan moment, can I?"
He reached out and clasped Kai's hand firmly. The moment their hands connected, Kai felt a rush of energy surge through him as the power activated.
Kai's grip tightened slightly as he waited for the rush of visions to hit him. But nothing came. No flashes of Steve's past, no answers. Just silence. His brows furrowed as his eyes darted down to Steve's hand. That's when he noticed it—the glove.
'Of course' Kai thought, his jaw tightening.
'The glove must be blocking it.'
Steve tilted his head, noticing Kai's hesitation. "What's wrong?" he asked, his voice casual.
At that moment Kai forced a tight smile. "Nothing, but... I prefer palm-to-palm handshakes. You know, the real deal," he said, his tone light but deliberate. "Why don't you take the glove off?"
However Steve raised an eyebrow, momentarily considering the request. "That's a bit odd," he said with a small chuckle. "But sure—"
Before he could remove the glove, his phone buzzed loudly in his pocket. He brought out the phone and glanced at the screen, frowning slightly. "Sorry, Kai. I have to take this," he said, stepping back. "We'll have to save that handshake for another time."
Kai's frustration flared as he watched Steve walk away, phone pressed to his ear.
"Convenient timing."
Kai thought bitterly, clenching his fists.
"Too convenient."
He stood there for a long moment, stewing in anger over what he hadn't seen. Was it deliberate? Was he stalling?
Four days later, Kai started back at work, He'd been given time to recover, but his mind never stopped turning, replaying the events in the warehouse and his failed attempt to uncover Steve George's truth, and the system hadn't sent him any mission.
Kai stepped into the precinct, his steps deliberate and his expression neutral, though his mind was anything but calm. If I can't figure out Steve George, I'll start with everyone else. Determined, he made his rounds, shaking hands with his colleagues one by one.
"Good to see you back, Kai," one officer said, clasping Kai's hand with a firm grip.
"You're tougher than I thought," another joked, giving him a nod of approval.
With each handshake, Kai focused, letting the power flow through him. The brief glimpses he saw confirmed what he suspected—they knew nothing about the case or the deeper layers surrounding it. 'They're clean,'
he thought, moving from one handshake to the next.
But every confirmation only added to his frustration. It's the glove, he confirmed.
By the time he reached the chief's office, Kai's patience was wearing thin. He knocked and stepped inside, his jaw tightening as he prepared for whatever new challenge awaited him.
The chief looked up from his desk, his expression serious but warm. "Kai, good to see you up and about," he said, gesturing for him to sit.
However Kai remained standing. "What's this about, Chief?"
The chief leaned back in his chair, folding his hands. "Kai, we're short-staffed in Westlake, and they've requested reinforcements. Effective immediately, you've been reassigned there."
Kai blinked, his brows knitting together. "Westlake? That's on the other side of the state," he said, his voice tight with disbelief. "Why me?"
The chief's tone softened. "You're one of the best we've got, Kai. They need someone with your skills. I know it's sudden, but it's the best decision for the department."
immediately Kai's frustration simmered, but he kept his composure. He clenched his fists momentarily before taking a slow breath. "Fine," he said, his tone resigned. "If that's what it takes."
Before leaving, Kai stepped closer, extending his hand. "Guess this is goodbye, Chief."
The chief hesitated for a moment, then shook Kai's hand firmly.
'Time to see what you're hiding.' Kai thought, his focus sharp as their palms connected.
