Chapter 26: 26. Kuchiki family
The soft glow of morning sunlight filtered through the thin, ornate paper windows of the Kuchiki estate. A young boy lay nestled in a bed, his eyes slowly blinking open. Short black hair framed his small face, and his sharp gray eyes gazed up at the ceiling as he awoke. His expression shifted into a smile full of youthful energy and excitement.
"Byakuya, come for breakfast!" his mother's voice called from the other side of the house, carrying warmth and tenderness that filled the entire room.
Byakuya's eyes widened with delight. He quickly climbed out of bed, his small feet pattering against the polished wooden floor. With eager hands, he pulled on his clan's traditional robes—black with elegant white accents—and tied them carefully, his small fingers fumbling for a moment before he got it right. Once ready, he dashed toward the dining room, his heart brimming with excitement.
As he entered the room, the soft sound of humming reached his ears. His mother—elegant and poised—stood by the table, setting down bowls of rice and miso soup with a grace that seemed effortless. Her long, dark hair was tied back, and her eyes sparkled with warmth as she turned to him.
"Here's my little petal," she cooed, reaching out to rub his head fondly.
Byakuya frowned, ducking away from her hand with a small pout. "Mom, is Uncle visiting today?" he asked, his gray eyes filled with hope.
Her smile widened, and she nodded. "Yes, he'll be coming with your grandfather."
Byakuya's eyes lit up with excitement. "Really?!" he beamed, his face glowing with joy. Without another word, he spun on his heel and bolted out of the room. His mother's soft laughter followed him as he ran through the hallways of the estate.
"Don't forget to wash your hands before breakfast!" she called out after him.
But Byakuya's focus was elsewhere. He dashed straight for his father's room, his little heart pounding with excitement. He reached the sliding door and pushed it open, peeking inside.
His father lay in bed, his face pale and his breathing slow but steady. A faint smile formed on his lips as he turned his head to see his son.
"Ahh, Byakuya, you're here," his father said, his voice rough and weak, followed by a light cough.
Cough... Cough...
Byakuya stepped inside, his excitement dimming as he saw his father's weakened state. But he kept his smile, walking over to stand beside him.
"Today, Uncle and Grandpa will come," Byakuya declared, his voice filled with pride.
His father's smile grew a little wider. "Then you should go welcome them when they arrive. They'll be happy to see you."
Byakuya nodded firmly, his little face filled with determination. "Hn!" he grunted in agreement before turning around and running out of the room, his footsteps echoing down the hall.

Musashi walked a step behind Captain Kuchiki Ginrei. The older man's posture was upright, his every movement measured and purposeful. His silver hair, tied neatly behind him, shimmered faintly in the sunlight, and his eyes gazed forward.
"Four years have passed since you became Byakuya's guardian," Ginrei said, his deep voice carrying a tone of quiet reflection.
"Yes, it's gone by quickly," Musashi replied calmly. He glanced at his Captain. "He's grown strong for his age."
Ginrei glanced at him from the side, his gaze sharp but not unkind. "Strength alone is not enough. A head of the Kuchiki Clan must possess grace, discipline, and wisdom."
Musashi nodded in agreement, his eyes narrowing in thought. "He'll learn. He's a little stubborn but he will learn. I'll help him."
Ginrei's lips curled into the faintest hint of a smile. "See that you do. Byakuya's future will be a heavy burden to bear."
They continued in silence for a time, the distant sound of the estate's gates coming into view. Two guards stood at attention, their eyes immediately recognizing the familiar figures approaching.
"Open the gate," Ginrei commanded, his voice firm but calm.
The guards stepped forward, pushing open the large, heavy wooden doors. As they swung open, a small figure could be seen standing just beyond the entrance, his little form nearly bouncing with excitement.
"Grandpa! Uncle!" Byakuya's high-pitched voice rang out as he dashed forward, his small feet carrying him with surprising speed.
Ginrei's smile widened ever so slightly as he crouched, arms open. Byakuya flung himself into his grandfather's embrace, giggling as Ginrei lifted him off the ground with ease.
"My, you've gotten heavier," Ginrei said, his eyes filled with warmth. "Are you eating properly?"
"Yes! Mom makes me eat everything on my plate," Byakuya replied proudly.
Ginrei set him down gently, and Byakuya's eyes shifted to Musashi. His face lit up once more. "Uncle!" he said, running toward him.
Musashi's lips was straight as a line. He crouched as Byakuya approached, his hand reaching out to ruffle the boy's hair. But Byakuya swatted his hand away with an annoyed pout.
"Stop that, Uncle!" Byakuya huffed, crossing his arms.
"Feisty, huh?" Musashi smiled a little, standing up. "Come on, breakfast is waiting."
They walked inside together, the warmth of family filling the air. Byakuya took his seat eagerly at the breakfast table, his eyes darting between the adults as dishes were brought in. The meal was lively, filled with conversation and laughter. Byakuya shared stories of his training and tried to mimic Musashi's finger flick techniques, much to everyone's amusement.
After the meal, Musashi and Sōjun moved to the sitting room, where a shogi board awaited. Sōjun's complexion had worsened since Musashi's last visit, his skin pale and his eyes sunken. But his smile remained as he gestured for Musashi to sit.
"Care for a game, Musashi?" Sōjun asked, his voice gentle but firm.
"I thought you'd never ask," Musashi replied, settling in across from him.
The two men played in silence at first, the soft click of shogi pieces the only sound in the room. But Musashi couldn't help but glance at Sōjun's face from time to time. His breathing was shallow, and his hands trembled slightly as he moved the pieces. It was subtle, but Musashi's sharp eyes caught every sign.
"Your strategy's slipping," Musashi said quietly, his gaze steady.
"Age catching up to me, perhaps," Sōjun replied with a small, weary smile.
"Don't lie to me," Musashi muttered, moving his piece with precision. His eyes met Sōjun's directly. "You should rest more."
"I will," Sōjun replied, his smile unwavering, though his eyes seemed distant.
