Beyond Lives and Horizons

Chapter 11: What is my potential?

Upon entering the library, Zack immediately noticed the tranquil and silent ambiance. Tall bookshelves filled the space, and the soft light streaming through the windows made it feel welcoming yet somewhat lonely. There weren't many people there—just a few figures immersed in their own worlds of books and papers. Most students preferred to socialize after classes, and the library, with its imposing silence, was the last place many chose.

Zack looked around, searching for specific material on chakra or Taijutsu. He already knew what he wanted to study, but he needed to locate the information. The shelves were well-organized, with signs indicating different areas of study: "Chakra Control," "Taijutsu Techniques," "Elemental Jutsus"... He made his way to the section on chakra and began to sift through the books, his eyes fixed on the spines of the volumes, eager for anything that would help him understand more about what he was trying to master.

As he searched, a figure caught his eye in the corner of the library. It was someone responsible for maintaining the place, likely a librarian or assistant. The man sat behind a small desk, with several books and papers spread out in front of him, seemingly engrossed in his own task. Zack felt a slight discomfort as he sensed the man watching him discreetly yet consistently. It was an attentive gaze, almost impersonal, as if he knew Zack was there in search of something but didn't feel the need to approach.

Zack felt slightly uneasy about the presence, but he didn't let it discourage him. He continued with his search, picking up a book titled "The Fundamentals of Chakra Control," and began to skim through it quickly, looking for information that would assist him in better understanding chakra—how it flowed and how he could train to improve it.

The librarian, still maintaining his watchful gaze on Zack, didn't utter a word. He merely continued observing from a distance, making no move to engage. Zack knew it was best not to draw too much attention and to make the most of his time there. Deep down, he understood that, even though the environment felt silent and isolating, he still had a goal to fulfill, and that was the only focus in his mind now.

With the book in hand, Zack stepped away from the librarian's desk and sat down at an empty table. There, he began to study the material more thoroughly, taking notes on everything he found interesting.

Zack opened the book carefully, eager to absorb its content. The book's plain cover didn't hint at the wealth of information he expected to find inside. The first pages contained a basic explanation of chakra: what it was and how it functioned in a ninja's body.

"Chakra is a vital energy that circulates throughout the human body and is essential for executing ninja techniques. It is formed by a combination of physical and spiritual energy and, without proper control, can be both a powerful force and a source of disaster."

Zack read attentively, absorbing the definition. The explanation was simple yet still challenging to fully comprehend. He knew that to better understand how chakra worked, he needed more than just theory.

The book continued, detailing how chakra moved through the body in channels called "meridians," culminating in specific points known as "tenketsus." When these points were correctly stimulated or activated, they allowed chakra to be directed and used more efficiently—whether to strengthen the body, heal wounds, or execute powerful jutsus.

Soon after, the book discussed tests a chakra user could perform to understand their potential. Zack became more attentive. He wanted to know whether he had any natural talent or if he would need to work much harder to achieve what he desired.

"To measure chakra control and potential, the first step is to perform a few simple tests. These tests allow an assessment of the flow and amount of chakra that the user can control with precision. They are fundamental to understanding where a ninja stands in relation to their mastery of chakra."

The first test described in the book was simple: the Chakra Perception Test. It involved deep meditation, focusing inwardly on the body. The goal was to try to sense the chakra circulating through the meridians and, over time, be able to control its direction. To do this, the book suggested concentrating on a specific point in the body, such as the center of the chest, and trying to feel a slight pressure or vibration indicating the presence of chakra.

The second test was the Chakra Stability Test. In this test, the user needed to activate their chakra and keep it active for a period while performing a simple task, such as holding a stone or extending their arms. This test was crucial for checking the ability to maintain chakra flow in a stable and continuous manner.

Lastly, the book mentioned the Channeling Efficiency Test. This test involved practicing hand seals but with the aim of perceiving the fluidity of chakra as it passed through these gestures. The ability to perform the seals quickly and accurately was one way to assess how well the chakra was being channeled within the body.

With the book still open before him, Zack began to reflect on the tests. What he most wanted was to understand how chakra functioned in his body and how he could control it. Perhaps these tests could be key to discovering what he needed to improve and, who knows, even whether he had any natural talent that would help him progress more quickly.

Zack continued to read attentively, absorbing each word about the Chakra Perception Test. The author of the book had subdivided the levels of chakra perception according to the stage at which a user would begin to sense this vital energy. What Zack was about to learn wasn't about controlling or manipulating chakra, but about the first signs of its presence in the body—crucial for taking the first step towards mastering chakra.

The subdivision was made into four tiers, indicating the levels of initial chakra perception. These tiers didn't concern how much the user could already control the chakra, but rather their capacity to feel and perceive this energy for the first time.

Initial Tier (Initial Perception): At this stage, beginners have difficulty perceiving any clear sensation of chakra. What they might experience is a faint feeling of tingling or warmth in some part of their body, but this is easily ignored, as it feels too vague. For many people, this initial perception can occur around the age of ten when the body begins to develop chakra, even without direct stimuli. The perception is subtle and often compared to a light touch, as if the body were being gently caressed by energy.

Intermediate Tier (Emerging Perception): Here, the user begins to feel chakra more clearly. It's not a powerful sensation, but it's easier to identify. The person might feel a slight tingling or a sensation of warmth in the center of the chest or abdomen. This sensation can be uncomfortable for some but indicates that chakra is present and circulating in the body. It's an exploratory stage, where perception becomes more conscious but still requires some effort to feel clearly.

Advanced Tier (Increased Perception): Users who reach this tier are capable of feeling chakra with greater intensity. Not just the tingling or warmth but a kind of pressure or stronger vibration, as if the energy is actively moving throughout the body. At this stage, the user can identify chakra flow points in different parts of the body, and perception becomes sharper. The ability to perceive chakra is more precise and less uncertain, and can be felt in specific areas of greater energy concentration.

Supreme Tier (Clear Perception): This is the most advanced stage of initial chakra perception. The user can feel their chakra clearly and almost tangibly. They can identify precisely how chakra moves in their body, as if they are in total harmony with their vital energy. At this tier, the perception of chakra is almost instinctual, and the user can even sense variations in the intensity of flow, identifying when their chakra is blocked or when imbalances occur. This level of perception is rare and typically achieved by those with large natural reserves of chakra or prolonged training.

"I would like to remind you," the book stated, "that the stage you are in during your chakra perception does not entirely define your future potential. It doesn't matter if you start at the Initial Tier (Initial Perception) or the Supreme Tier (Clear Perception), as the path to improvement is a continuous one. Even those who start at a lower tier have the chance to achieve higher levels through training and perseverance. The crucial point is the starting point, which will guide your development and your understanding of the energy circulating in your body."

The author also highlighted that, in some family lineages, continuous and quality chakra training could lead descendants to have a stronger connection to chakra from an early age. Families with large chakra reserves or a strong tradition of controlling this energy often saw their children starting with a more refined connection to chakra. This meant that, at the first encounter with the energy, they were already more capable of sensing and understanding its flow, resulting in greater natural potential.

"It's important to realize," the book continued, "that a user's potential is largely determined to a certain extent even at birth. The characteristics and natural chakra reserves can be passed down to descendants, but this doesn't mean that someone with a 'weak' or common lineage cannot achieve great feats. Training, perseverance, and dedication can transform anyone."

He reflected deeply on what he had read in the book and the conversations he had heard in class. Remembering his classmates' words, who were just beginning to perceive chakra, he reached a conclusion. If what was said was truly accurate, and most students hadn't surpassed the Emerging Tier (Emerging Perception), it indicated that none of them seemed to have exceptional talent or innate potential for controlling chakra. This only reinforced the idea that the greatest clans weren't at the top by chance; their descendants possessed some kind of differentiating factor.

"Maybe they have a unique technique that sets them apart," he thought, "or a special ability that allows chakra to manifest more clearly from the beginning." This perception didn't seem like a mere coincidence. The most prestigious clans, with large chakra reserves, were among the most powerful and influential. It was evident that this didn't happen without reason.

He concluded that, in addition to a differentiated technique, these clans likely cultivated some special quality among their members, whether in the form of a rare ability, specific training, or even a genetic predisposition that made them more adept at manipulating chakra. The starting point for someone, when it came to this energy, was crucial. Those with strong and well-developed heritage from an early age had a significant advantage.

Even so, ignoring the reality was not an option. To stand out, he would need to develop his own skill with chakra, whether through a unique technique or through hard work to compensate for the lack of a powerful lineage.

"But that doesn't mean all hope is lost," he thought, analyzing the book and his discoveries. "There's always something to learn. Each challenge is an opportunity for growth." The certainty that anyone's potential could be shaped with perseverance and dedication remained firmly in his mind.
