Chapter 45: Medhiv Card
Ryuji was aboard the 'Queen Anne,' staring out at the endless ocean. The journey ahead was going to take ten days, and it was anything but ideal.
"Why not just cross the Atlantic directly from London to New York?" he muttered to himself.
The reality was that this route wasn't available yet, not in 1919. Ryuji's journey first required a stop in Los Angeles before continuing by train to New York. Robert Stark, who was also aboard, planned to settle in Los Angeles for a while, where he had a property.
Ryuji wasn't in any rush either, but the monotony of the journey was already wearing on him. The first two days were miserable—seasickness had kept him confined to his cabin. By the third day, though, his magical resilience adapted, and he found himself feeling better.
That morning, Ryuji made a decision. Diana had to go. He couldn't focus with her hanging around his cabin. He excused himself under the guise of needing privacy for "magic meditation," but in reality, it was time to use the system again.
["System!"]
The familiar text appeared before him: ["Host! How can I assist you?"]
"Continue to draw cards," Ryuji ordered.
["Host, you currently have 82,962 talent points. It is recommended to upgrade the talent magic draw card system before proceeding."]
Ryuji hesitated. The points were hard-earned through battles, from the skirmish in Feld Town to the takedown of Ares during the war. But an upgrade? He hadn't considered that possibility.
"Upgrade? What's the difference?"
["The first card draw was a beginner's reward, with randomized selections. Upgrading will allow you to specify the character or ability you wish to draw, though the cost will significantly increase."]
Ryuji's thoughts raced. A random draw could land him with something utterly useless—like a low-tier D card. But the idea of spending most of his talent points in one go was daunting.
"How much for an SS-tier card?"
["10 million talent points."]
Ryuji's jaw dropped. "Are you kidding me? I don't have that kind of balance!"
["This system offers loans,"] the system replied matter-of-factly.
Ryuji groaned. "A loan? You mean you'll drain me dry and add interest on top of that? No thanks!"
He weighed his options. A random draw could result in disappointment, but he didn't have enough points to guarantee the top-tier reward.
"What's the percentage chance of pulling an SS card randomly?"
["For the beginner draw: 1%. For subsequent draws: 0.1%."]
"Hold on," Ryuji said, his frustration building. "You're telling me the odds drop tenfold after the first draw? That's insane!"
["The host may also opt for an S-tier draw, which has a 1% chance per pull. The cost, however, is 8,000 talent points per draw."]
Ryuji slammed his fist onto the desk. "This is highway robbery! And you expect me to spend 8,000 points for a chance at an S-tier? Forget SS-tier!"
["The system can offer a concession: The host may preview the available SS cards before committing."]
"That's it? You're just teasing me now!"
Despite his complaints, Ryuji's curiosity got the better of him. "Fine. Show me the SS cards."
A list appeared, each name and skill more tantalizing than the last: Medivh, Archmage of the Guardian Tower; Doctor Strange, Sorcerer Supreme; Scarlet Witch, Wielder of Chaos Magic.
Ryuji stared at the screen, his greed warring with his caution. These weren't just abilities—they were legacies.
"Alright," he finally said. "What if I take the loan and go for Medivh?"
["The loan will cover the 10 million talent points required, but interest will accrue daily. Repayment must be made in talent points or equivalent magical energy."]
Ryuji rubbed his temples. The weight of the decision felt crushing, but the thought of possessing Medivh's powers was too enticing to ignore.
"Fine," he grumbled. "I'll take the loan and pull for Medivh."
["Understood. Proceeding with the SS-tier selection: Medivh."]
The system's interface lit up, and the card materialized before him. The image of Medivh glowed with an otherworldly energy.
As the power of the card flowed into him, Ryuji felt his body surge with newfound strength and knowledge. The world around him seemed to sharpen, every detail becoming clearer.
This was it—the start of something far greater than he had imagined.
