Being A Law God In Marvel!

Chapter 41: Mysterious Invitation

Staring at the warship ahead, Ryuji couldn't help but feel a bit speechless. He had assumed the ticket Samir purchased would be for a cruise ship or a merchant vessel, but instead, they were now boarding a full-blown warship.

The sheer absurdity of it hit him. Then again, it was 1919—no IDs were needed for something as mundane as train travel. Yet, for a warship, you still needed proper documentation.

---

Fortunately, the military IDs they held, though questionably legitimate, worked. The sailors didn't dare question them—after all, these types of "off-the-books" missions often required operatives with obscure credentials.

It helped that these certificates, although crudely put together, carried enough gravitas to make anyone second-guess challenging them. Ryuji now understood why Steve had been able to acquire them with ease.

---

"Boss, there really weren't any civilian ships headed for Hong Kong," Samir explained, wiping sweat from his brow. "This ship is making a temporary stop to rotate their garrison."

Ryuji waved dismissively, signaling it wasn't a big deal.

Samir had proven his worth more than once. He was excellent at handling logistics like this. Without him, Ryuji figured he'd be clueless about where to even begin buying tickets.

---

The ship itself wasn't just carrying sailors. Rich businessmen, socialites, and a few courtesans milled about as passengers. It seemed the British couldn't resist mixing business with pleasure—even on military vessels.

As the ship's engines roared to life, signaling departure, Ryuji leaned against the railing, lost in thought. "Why does this name, Tamar, sound so familiar?"

---

"What's wrong?" Diana asked as she approached him, her curious eyes scanning his face.

"Nothing, really. The name of this ship just feels... familiar," Ryuji said absentmindedly. Then it clicked.

He remembered reading about the HMS Tamar during his school days. The British warship had been stationed in Hong Kong since 1897 and played a significant role during its occupation. However, in 1941, to prevent it from falling into Japanese hands, it was deliberately sunk near Wan Chai.

---

It was a strange coincidence, one that sent a chill down his spine. Still, this was just one stop in his journey. For now, he had to focus on the present.

While he pondered, Samir returned, holding a crisp invitation. "Boss, someone's invited you to a reception on the deck. Looks like a big deal."

---

"An invitation? Who sent it?" Ryuji asked as he examined the card. It was elegantly written, but vague—no name, no details.

"Not sure. But I figured you wouldn't want to miss a rich man's gathering."

Diana tilted her head. "A rich man's gathering? I don't have a cocktail dress, so I'll pass."

---

Ryuji chuckled. "You don't need a dress to outshine everyone. You look stunning no matter what you wear—or don't wear," he teased with a grin.

Diana rolled her eyes, though a small smile betrayed her amusement. "Fine, I'll come. But don't expect me to stay long."

---

Samir's eyes lit up. "What about you, Carlos?"

"I'll pass," Carlos replied without looking up from her notebook. She had been furiously sketching something ever since they boarded.

Ryuji shrugged. "Suit yourself. Let's go, Diana."

---

As they stepped out, Diana leaned in and asked, "What's Carlos been working on?"

"Oh, just a little challenge I gave her. She has to crack a basic 'magic program' I designed before I reward her," Ryuji said with a sly grin.

"Magic program?"

"Think of it as a puzzle. If she figures it out, she gets a gift. If not, well…" Ryuji trailed off, leaving the rest unsaid.

---

Diana shook her head in mild exasperation. "You're impossible. She's a warrior, not a magician."

Ryuji smirked. "Maybe she'll surprise us both."

---

Samir followed them, muttering under his breath. "Must be nice to get gifts for cracking puzzles. All I get is the joy of running errands."

Ryuji raised an eyebrow. "And how are your friends doing, Samir?"

"They're still staying behind," Samir admitted. "The Chief doesn't trust Americans, and Charlie prefers his quiet life in London. I don't blame them, really."

---

"Fair enough," Ryuji said. He didn't dwell on it. The Chief and Charlie had faded from his circle, their contributions to his journey long over.

"But it's a shame about Logan and Victor," Samir added. "Those two would've been perfect allies for you."

---

Ryuji smiled faintly. "We'll cross paths again someday."

He had extended an invitation to the two brothers after their encounter in London, but they had refused. It didn't bother him. Everyone had their own path, and his was still uncertain.

For now, the journey to Hong Kong—and beyond—continued.
