...
My parents had abandoned me because they were so poor that they could not raise me properly, so they decided to abandon me in that orphanage, so that someone would adopt me and give me the life that, according to them, I deserved. Unfortunately that never happened because no one adopted me, I never had a family and when I became adult, I had to leave the orphanage and fend for myself, luckily, I had an unusual talent, that's why I became so rich and powerful, but when I found out the truth and how they died... That devastated me inside, after hearing the truth, I wish I had been able to find them sooner and give them the love they really deserve, to tell them that I was okay, that I had triumphed in life and that, from now on, they would never live in misery again. Unfortunately, I could never fulfill that dream, but my current father... He did have his father since birth, he could enjoy him, but now that he has died he doesn't even seem sad, as if his father's death was not a big deal, as if someone he didn't know had died and, therefore, he didn't care too much.
"Ah, I see what you mean" – my father said while letting out a long sigh.
"I would like to hear why it seems that the one who has died is the neighbor and not your father" – I said angrily.
For me, someone who never had a family, this was something that made me very angry, someone who had been able to enjoy the love of his parents since birth and who now, when he was dead, didn't even feel sorry for him... it's unforgivable!
"You see, Jacob, I don't think you know the whole truth" - my father said.
"What do you mean?" – I asked without understanding.
I would surely know if my memories were not sealed.
"I mean your grandfather was a great man, yes, but he was almost never home, he always went out on numerous trips and never, no matter how I begged him, he never let me go with him, he always said I couldn't, in fact, I remember perfectly well that he was practically not with me on any of my birthdays. In fact, the exact same thing happened to your aunt, our father was practically always traveling, doing things that we didn't even know, that he didn't even want to tell us, in fact, your aunt and I came to suspect that he even had another secret family whom he loved more, that's why he left for so long" – my father said.
I was surprised, yes, I remember now, Jacob's grandfather in the film and in the books was practically never home because of his work, which led my father and my aunt to treat him even as if he were just an acquaintance, but I don't remember what he did outside, why did he travel? I know I knew what he was doing on those trips, but my brain refused to tell me the truth, damn it...
"Dad, I'm afraid I can't believe you, I know Grandpa, he would never have cheated on Grandma or had a secret family" – I said.
That was what Jacob felt, his feelings had mixed with mine and hearing about my grandfather like that made me angry, how could I insinuate that my grandfather had a secret family?
"Jacob... we would not have suspected it if it were not for some letters we saw, in which were written things like: "When are you going to return? I already miss you, kisses" and we also believe that there was more than one because we found similar letters, but from other girls, always telling him that they missed him or that when he was going to return, of course I can't show them to you because your aunt and I broke them in a fit of anger, since then, nothing was the same between your grandfather and us" – said my father.
I was surprised, but I knew that those letters were not from his secret lovers, but from one of the peculiar girls, specifically his ex-girlfriend whose name was Emma, at least in the books, that's one of the few things I've managed to remember, I guess that God didn't seal that part of my memories because it didn't mean anything that I knew their names or not or in other words, it didn't give me any significant advantage.
"I didn't know... but how can you be sure that he had one or more mistresses? Maybe they were letters from his ex-girlfriends or something" – I suggested.
"Jacob, I know that you were very close to your grandfather and I also know that you both had a very special connection, so you have a hard time accepting the fact that your grandfather could have several mistresses, that he was cheating on my mother" – my father said.
"But, maybe..." – I tried to say.
"Maybe nothing, when we saw those letters, Abe was already 35 years old, do you think a 35-year-old lady would send such cheesy letters?" – my father asked.
"That's right, no 35-year-old woman would send something so cute, that's why I think you're wrong about grandpa" – I said.
"You don't understand, Jacob, since those letters couldn't have been written by a 35-year-old lady, it means they were young women, that's why we think your grandfather liked girls... young, maybe too young" – my father said.
"That is a very serious accusation and I will not tolerate it in my presence" – I said angrily.
Since I came into this world, this is the time I've been angriest, did you just call my grandfather, your own father, a pedophile? That is an extremely serious accusation, I could not tolerate it.
My father seemed surprised by my words, but he quickly recovered.
"Okay, I didn't expect you to understand anyway, come on, let's keep picking up, there's still a lot of work ahead and little time, your mother said she would cook today, which is quite rare, so we have to be at home as soon as possible" – my father said.
But at that precise moment, my aunt arrived with a completely full black garbage bag.
"Frank, I've already picked up a few things, but I have to go pick up the children, do you mind if I come another day to finish this?" – my aunt asked.
"Not at all, go, we'll pick up a few things and leave too, today Alice promised to cook" – my father said with a smile.
"Oh, good luck with that, goodbye, Jacob" – my aunt said.
"Goodbye" – I said dryly.
After the enlightening conversation I had had with my father, I didn't feel like talking to anyone at all, I just wanted to lock myself in my room and think alone, but I knew I couldn't, I had to find that postcard and consequently, the name of the island and this would surely be my last chance to do it, an opportunity that I could not miss for anything in the world.
"Is something wrong with you?" – my aunt asked my father when she saw me like this.
"No, nothing, I'll tell you later" – my father said.
He said the latter in a whisper, in an attempt to make me not hear anything, but my ear is pretty good and I heard everything he said, but it didn't matter anyway.
…
After spending a couple of hours cleaning up the house, I must say that I didn't find anything at all, seriously, what's going on here? I don't remember almost anything about the events, but what I do remember is that in the movie, Jacob found a box with everything he needed to find the island, why couldn't I find it then? I searched in his office, in his bedroom and found nothing.
"It seems to me that whatever I am looking for, it is no longer here..." – I said disappointed.
I was already waiting for the system to tell me that I had failed in the mission, but that notification never came.
System.
[What's wrong?]
Why haven't I received the notification?
[What notification?]
Well, what's it going to be, the notification saying that I've failed the mission!
[Why did you think that?]
Maybe because I haven't found anything? I couldn't even find a clue about the name of the island or its location, doesn't that mean I haven't accomplished the mission?
[And at what point did I say that the tracks were at your grandfather's house? Because I don't think I ever mentioned that]
But in the film...
[The movie and the books are one thing, this is real life, host and nothing in real life is easy, there are always obstacles that we must overcome to achieve our goals...]
I understand, but... If what I am looking for is not here, where is it?
[Sometimes, very occasionally, you don't need to look for]
And what the hell does that mean?
Fuck, not even a clue!
I have no clues as to the whereabouts of what I'm looking for and the system doesn't offer me any help, how the hell does he want me to do the mission if I have no fucking idea where to look?!
I was outraged, but I didn't have time to complain because I heard my father say something at that moment.
"Come on, Jacob, we'll throw this away and then we'll go home, your mother's food must be ready by now and you know she doesn't like us to be late" – my father said.
Great, on top of that I have to eat homemade food! According to old Jacob's recollections, his mother is not exactly a good cook, in fact, I hadn't tasted homemade food for a year, why did she suddenly want to cook?
Having not even found a clue and angry due to my father had said about my grandfather, we headed home to eat my new mother's disgusting food.
